Has anybody tried one of these in a Garmin 296 etc.?

Sort of. I bought one as a spare for my 296. I ran it dry when I first got it and it lasted pretty much as long as the garmin one. Other than that test I haven't used it other than putting it in the unit for a flight every six months to charge it. It doesn't snap in quite perfectly like the garmin one does, fits a little loose. Other than that no issues. I've always got ship's power so I don't anticipate ever needing it, just grabbed one because they were cheap.
