A report by the Transportation Safety Board says the unnamed man had a blood alcohol level of about .35 — more than four times the legal limit for driving a vehicle.

The chopper, owned by Gemini Helicopters of Grande Prairie, was monitoring well sites when it went down on Jan. 27, 2013, in a wooded area near Fox Creek, about 260 kilometres northwest of Edmonton.

This can't be the first time this happened ... so why didn't somebody speak up?

Point 35? I know helicopters can be scary, but thats quite a bit of liquid "courage", even for me. Can't even imagine being able to find your way to the airport, let alone actually fly. Of course, flying an auto pilot equipped two crew airplane, pissed as a rat, would be far safer than driving the GMC to the airport. But a helicopter? Should think that would be a challenge, indeed.

gotta agree with you on that one, a few summers ago a heli dude moved the machine closer to the fuel bowser at the same pad where 6 others were parked, then I got a inquiry later if buddy was fit to fly, I said I haven't talked to him but would right away.....I cornered him and he was barely able to talk coherently.....I had to hold the phone away from my ear when I called the company ops manager to inform him.....that heli dude wasn't fired,suspended or f**k all, at one time he lost his licence for a year doing this same crap.......

On one occasion I went on a test flight with a pilot that reeked of booze. I mentioned it to the chief pilot who said " oh man not again!" No action taken though. Safety has become such an industry it is no longer useful.

The "Safety industry" isn't the issue Hoppy, lack of integrity on the part of that Chief Pilot is the problem.

Perhaps he's never heard of a legal concepts of vicarious liability, or contributory negligence.

as well I went on a test flight with a pilot who smelled of booze and cigarettes, I had worked late on the machine and we had planned a test flight for 0730 the next morning, he had been drinking I found out later till 0230 and we went flying maybe 4-5 hours later, I regretted going in the machine later and should have said no we are not flying today and called the company to let them know we were grounded and why......but I didn't, the pilot is high time and been around forever.....would I ever speak up again....YES
