The European TA/TL system makes little sense, is nonstandardized and adds an extra (very important) step in already busy terminal areas.

Indeed, and for good reason: the vast bulk of the Canadian media sphere is centred around the GTA. If you live here you probably don't notice the bias, but if you live anywhere else in the country the "national news", TV shows, etc., are heavily weighted towards Toronto and environs. Granted, the bias is probably unintentional. The media types have easier access close to home. The entertainment industry needs to be centred somewhere. But if you're from another province you get tired of yet another individual with an Ontarian accent claiming to speak for all of Canada.rxl wrote:The only people who think YYZ is the "centre of the universe" are those who don't live there.
People in Toronto tend to have a very narrow view of the country. They'll think of places like Sudbury as far in the north, when Sudbury is south of most of the Canadian-American border. The City of Toronto also doesn't help matters when it proclaims an "'extreme' cold weather alert" when the temperatures descend to what most of the country lives through for months on end every winter. And when that gets broadcast as national news as if -15° was somehow noteworthy, the rest of the country laughs and wonders if the mayor will call in the army to shovel snow again. Toronto is its own little world with undo influence, and that's why the rest of Canada deridingly labels it the "centre of the universe".
I've got nothing against people from Toronto. I've lived here for many years now. And the reality is that Miami is closer than St John's, and Los Angeles is closer than Prince Rupert. The average person here just doesn't think of the rest of the Canada as it's not that relevant to their daily lives (might be one reason why so many feathers got ruffled when a western political party took power).

I understand American Airlines used to set their altimeters to QFE, or field elevation for approach so that the altimeter would read altitude above the airport. I understand it required 3 altimeters, one for the Captain set at field elevation, second same for the co-pilot and a third set at the station altimeter setting. I wonder if they still do that.
The average pilot, despite the somewhat swaggering exterior, is very much capable of such feelings as love, affection, intimacy and caring.
These feelings just don't involve anyone else.

You adapt to it easily - like activating your turn signal as you approach a corner. The TA (TL) is well-communicated. No different from remembering if you have to get a clearance at 270, 230, 180, or 12,500 in Canada, and figuring out where you are in space before you get there.V1 Rotate wrote:The European TA/TL system makes little sense, is nonstandardized and adds an extra (very important) step in already busy terminal areas.
But yes, it IS nonsensical, and that's why Eurocontrol is trying to establish a common altitude/FL. But it sure is easy referring to a FL, knowing everyone anywhere near you is on the same page.
