ATPL Canadian conversion to American

Post by Oni »

what a day.... studied for my FAA ATPL conversion. called to book the exam and was told it was stopped Aug. 1st. now new items added to the list to complete. but the problem is after a couple of phone calls to the FAA, they are still in the dark. apparently there is a 30 hour ground school course required but they don't have any info on that either. so now the wait begins until they get it sorted out

You didn't hear about Aug 1st?

http://www.aopa.org/News-and-Video/All- ... Aug-1.aspx
AOPA is recommending that pilots who plan to earn an airline transport pilot certificate within the next couple of years take the ATP knowledge test before Aug. 1, when new rules will extend the training process and could significantly increase costs.
It's been all over the internet ... everyone's
been trying to beat the deadline.

When I was at CAE for my recurrent in June, they were also in panic mode as the FAA is also going to require 12hrs of 2 crew Sim time in a >40k lb airplane of which none is loggable. Total cost will likely $7-10k...just to sit the ATPL exam. Not sure if that applied to conversions. CAE had very little direction but they were trying to develop a program for it. They were on their 3rd revision at that point.

yes I already have the Canadian one but sadly it won't help with the sim or in class ground school. been on the phone a lot with the FAA. sadly I got my permission to write in july and not one thing was mentioned about this from them.

Are you guys serious? My company is flying me to the US from Australia in Oct. to do sim training and I was planning on doing my conversion then. Surprised I never heard about this. Is that because they are moving to Part 61? So you guys are saying it's now going to be a month of ground school and 5K to do it? Who in their right mind would do it now unless they had a job or dual citizenship. Missed it by 2 months...son of a...

ATP has always been governed by part 61.

Short story, the FAA is going the way of the EU for the ATP. Most cost effective way is get a job at a 121 carrier.

Finally got some info on the current conversion process.

-30 hour CTP training course. (As of now only one is approved, at Embry-Riddle, and you have to be a student of Embry-Riddle to qualify) Talk about putting the cart before the horse.
-4 hours Fixed based simulation training
-6 hours Full motion simulation training
-Medical
-Written test
-Flight test
-2 lunar landings with a minimum 4 hour spacewalk

Anyone want to go halfsies in a simulator?!?

So now Canada has the lowest requirements of any country in the world for an ATPL. Nice.
