The Colonel.
Those of you who enjoy the Colonel can still find him on Pprune in the Canada forum as canuck51.

Not that I don't love half a roll inverted after take off with a delicious piece of fried chicken.
I certainly think it's worth noting The Old FogDucker is there too.

He is welcome to the Canada forum on pprune. I never look at it anymore as it hardly gets any action and what is posted is almost all no value added, negativity.

The Colonel never insulted three bars, only four bars.

I was touring a museum in Norway last week, and saw profound displays of what the Gestapo had done on their watch - truly shocking! I'm happy to think that our peers here, the volunteer moderators, are keeping the purpose of the forum focused positively. Was he banned again? The Gestapo on this site keep a firm watch!
Personally, I find it pretty easy to contribute here without upsetting any moderators.....
Re: The Colonel.
Saw a similar thing in Amsterdam. I personally would be very very selective as to whose actions I compared to the "Gestapo" but to each his own I guess.PilotDAR wrote:I was touring a museum in Norway last week, and saw profound displays of what the Gestapo had done on their watch - truly shocking! Re: The Colonel.
CFR and pilotDar, relax guy's! I'm not comparing the mods to what you saw in a museum. Maybe I should have referenced something more appropriate. Perhaps too flippant on my part. I don't even know if Colonel was banned. That was what I was asking to begin with. There have been a lot of posters banned/leave the forum due to excessive "oversight" from "big brother". Is that better?

Re: The Colonel.
It is AvCanada's sandbox though. Everyone else is a guest, and subject to the rules, and application of the rules of the sandbox owner. It is my opinion that AvCanada, like other aviation forums is trying to promote a positive and inclusive environment, to encourage grown and mentoring. Yeah, the odd barb slips out of most of us, but on the whole, if the main audience is left feeling intimidated or put down, why would they participate? How would AvCanada benefit from allowing a few grumps dominate things while the general crowd flee on mass. There have been a lot of posters banned/leave the forum due to excessive "oversight" from "big brother".
Sure, the Colonel (like many others here) has awesome experience, and can provide great mentoring and support if he chooses to. I'm sure that AvCanada would love to have the benefit of his great wisdom - kindly related. And it is theirs, and theirs alone to judge.
I can say that with eight years experience on three different aviation chat groups, I have yet to see moderator action which I thought was unreasonable.....
Re: The Colonel.
Agree with you on all the above. Almost. Just not a fan of disappearing/locked threads/strikes/warnings and the rest of the Political Correct bullshite. It's the internet, take it for what it is. My first post wasn't to bolster the Colonel either, most of his posts are informative, accurate and factual but I find them arrogant and condescending a lot of time. But, I have the choice of what I read and what I ignore. Instead of whining, some forum members should just click the back button.PilotDAR wrote:It is AvCanada's sandbox though. Re: The Colonel.
I guess the colonel decided to hang out on a forum with the kind of people that he likes the most. PPrune is full of 4 bars types.
I think he secretly admires them and has a pair of PJ's with four stripes on each shoulder.

Re: The Colonel.
If you review my portfolio. I think you will see the mods, while quick to cater to the more sensitive members at times, are pretty lenient.

Re: The Colonel.
I quite agree, though perhaps you also have the understanding as to what to ignore, others, whim we should be trying to encourage to join our ranks may not so much. If we have individuals who are condescending to other posters and mods, and that behaviour intimidates "newer" or prospective posters, does that not entirely defeat the effort to grow the grass roots of GA? What about the very tentative newbie who is considering dipping their toe among the sky gods? This kind of drivel will turn them right off. Personally, I'm hear to encourage, inspire and mentor, as I have been so generously by others, for decades, in aviation. My first post wasn't to bolster the Colonel either, most of his posts are informative, accurate and factual but I find them arrogant and condescending a lot of time. I'm happy to think that a moderator is holding the line, to prevent intimidating countless newbies, who we are trying to encourage...
Yeah, I'm trying to do my small part to keep "no bars" also in the forefront......PPrune is full of 4 bars types
Re: The Colonel.
I think the efficacy of the "effort to grow the grass roots of GA" is easy to overstate. Most people who try GA come from an inner compulsion, and the only thing that puts people off is the price.
Golf has plenty of devotees, and there's no shortage of yachts in the harbour here; neither are pastimes known for giving the warm fuzzies to noobs.

Re: The Colonel.
And that reality is the problem.neither are pastimes known for giving the warm fuzzies to noobs.
If we, who enjoy this (or any) pastime, don't make it attractive to newbies, and encourage them to join, it will die. A pyramid scheme? Maybe, but to be sustained, we need new people to get in at the ground floor, and continue to participate. I trained the new owner into three different Norwegian airports last week. Only Bergen had 100LL. I did not even ask the price of the fuel, but I know that it cost $46 to land there to buy it. It would appear that a lack of growth in GA there has caused a reduction of demand, and therefore supply of Avgas, and other things aviation. That can happen here too.
If we, who are established in aviation aren't seen to put our best foot forward, the newbies with disposable income will spend it on boats, or fast cars, and what we do gets more difficult/expensive for us.
Every summer at "the corn roast", I would take every kid flying. It sometimes exceeded 20 flights in the afternoon and evening. Then one day, a late teen came up to me, and told me that I had taken her years earlier, and she enjoyed it so much, that she joined Air Cadets, earned both glider and power licenses, and was now accepted to the Armed Forces as a pilot. I inspired someone!
If I had been rude and elitist, wanting only to talk to the other old timers there, that would not have happened. Let alone the benefits to aviation, there is no excuse to not mentor and inspire, when time and opportunity permit. If someone has the time and knowledge to post nasty, they could instead post nice - and sustain a favourable image for aviation. Most new people struggle with the cost, at least we can help with some moral support!

Re: The Colonel.
For the most part I agree, but PF is right in that you're not going to sell aviation to those who aren't already interested in it. Fostering a continuing GA movement I feel requires giving the right encouragement in the right places. There are some that are interested that are going to benefit GA and some who are interested who are not. You want to give the appropriate encouragement to the former group, and probably just not disenfranchise the latter.PilotDAR wrote: And that reality is the problem.

I don't thing the usual avcanada antics are really going to turn away people who are commited to the cause, they just might not be on avcanada - like a majority of the Canadian aviation community. If some mean people on the internet was enough to turn you away from something, well, you probably weren't that interested in it in the first place.
All in all, Avcanada is one of the tamer and more reasonable, and dare I say it, helpful, forums I've seen. If you don't think so, well, you just haven't read enough internet forums. This one is actually populated by people I know, most who are about the same here as they are in person.
Either way, since this thread is about Hedley/Colonel Sanders/Gene Hasenfus, we should start a pool for when he's going to show up here again.

We can't stop here! This is BAT country!

Re: The Colonel.
I figure he'll be posting under an anonymous pseudonym in a matter of weeks if not days. Look for the poster who asks hard questions and gives intelligent answers.... much like his postings on Pittsspecials. Like him or not... he is a person who is dedicated to and really enjoys teaching--and teaching to a higher standard to make aviation a better place.
It's just that the internet forum and the pitfalls of misunderstood communications and active trolling make it difficult for the message to get through once his identity is known and people start trolling him or he starts trolling back....
