Poll: What kind of flying do you do? Or do you fly?

Poll: What kind of flying do you do? Or do you fly?
Reading the age poll I became intrigued by the distribution...so that got me wondering
With 60% (+/-) 21-40 it certainly goes against the overwhelming perception that flying is an old guys club.
So that led to why the folks on the forum are flying.
What percentage fly recreationally, commercially or don't fly at all but just love aviation?
Curious minds need to know (lol)

I think this poll is missing what is likely the largest category here on Avcan. 'Still in training'. Aspiring commercial pilots, that are somewhere between that first fan flight, and that first revenue flight.

What's a fan flight?
My ambition is to live forever - so far, so good!
Re: Poll: What kind of flying do you do? Or do you fly?
Fam flight? Familiarization flight.

Thought that was a given, guess not and have adjusted pollgoldeneagle wrote:I think this poll is missing what is likely the largest category here on Avcan. 'Still in training'. Aspiring commercial pilots, that are somewhere between that first fan flight, and that first revenue flight.

I wouldn't take the age poll as a direct sample of the aviation community as a whole. It's highly likely that "old boys" have no interest wasting their time bickering with a wanna be fighter jock with daddy issues and the rest of the self proclaimed experts on this site, and therefore do not contribute to these forums.
To be frank, the vast majority of the people on this site don't accuratly reflect the opinions of the aviation community and are actually quite a joke. Of course there are some great posters with excellent advice, but to be honest, the ones that often stir the pot here would get laughed at right in their face if they spewed their nonsense at fly-in or a crew room.
Take anything and everything on this site with an asteroid size grain of salt. It doesn't properly represent anything to do with aviation in this country.

I don't do any real flying, just on my Combat Flight Simulator 3. I do have about 50 minutes of stick time divided between a 1944 SNJ Texan and a 1931 Travelaire. Both were flown here:

How about adding another selection to the poll - for us unwashed military types.

I think that should be lumped into a category 'flying for a living'.
Geez did I say that....? Or just think it....?

Happy to accommodate, assumed it would fall under Commercial but once again learning never to assume and be more specific.iflyforpie wrote:I think that should be lumped into a category 'flying for a living'.

Appreciate the point of view and this was one of those curiosity things but...PositiveRate27 wrote:I wouldn't take the age poll as a direct sample of the aviation community as a whole. Had a friend pull up the Stats Can numbers for me (I can never figure that website out) and the FAA numbers.
FWIW by percentage the the SC/FAA numbers and so far on here for the 2 polls are in the same general zone.
Still taking with a large grain as all the numbers could easily be out to lunch, but it is interesting.
In my highly biased personal opinion

Recreational PPL here. I fly for fun and while I may do my commercial one day I have no aspirations of making a living in an airplane.

When you start reading some of the recent threads
GA needs new blood
How old are you
What kind of flying do you do
It get real enlightening and certainly paints a picture of where things are heading.
Guess the big questions become:
- Does anyone really care?
- Anyone willing to do something about it?

Re: Poll: What kind of flying do you do? Or do you fly?
I fly about 200 hours a year, of which about 50 would be purely for my enjoyment, 120 flying to work at one of my clients, and 30 would be test flying, which is "work" for me - so 75% work related. I spend a notable amount of my working time "finding" for people, or promoting with TC, ways to simplify and reduce cost of aircraft mods and repairs. It is my small part to keep flying affordable. I'm keeping pace at best, but more often succumbing to the inertia of a system which needs more objective documentation of things aircraft, and less knowledgeable judgement. So more now, I test and report, rather than state test not required, and just approve.
I should do more to "wave the flag" for GA in Canada, and promote it at the grass roots. I used to do many rides for kids at several annual social flying events I used to attend, but the events no longer take place, so that venue, is gone, and has not been replaced.
So, I offer my time at this, and at least one other well known aviation website. When people inquire, or contact me, I do my very best to provide them with a positive and effective answer/comment to present a welcoming image for GA. I have met many people, and flown a few rides, resulting from contact on this and the other website.
I was charmed to see an eager group of kids at the Alberta Aviation Museum during a visit in the spring, and would loved to have participated in the volunteer tutorial they were receiving, but it seemed to be going really well on its own, so I watched with appreciation of the effort before me....
