Good grief what's wrong with me?

Post by Pop n Fresh »

I want nothing more than to fly, the whole time (nearly a decade) I was poor because I got married and had to stop working out of town, thus making flying much too expensive while buying my wife a house and myself a way over priced motorcycle.

Couple years ago, start flying again, get back my currency.

Decide it's too selfish to go flying around the circuit by myself and spend so much per hour on what is for certain going to just be a hobby at this point of life.

Quit flying. Hang out here (seriously, I must need psych help.) take up fishing.

Forward to now, since we paid off the stupid house, I am considering buying a piper cub. You know, because, they are priced similarly to the motorcycle and it seems like a good unit to take the kids fishing one at a time.

Somewhat off topic answers welcome by me but subject to strict moderation. Offer available until thread locked and or removed.

While putting down the iPad and fork is never a bad idea, buying an airplane is a good one. Of course there are lots of reasons not to do it, but life is short and you can run out of time dithering and never accomplish anything. It's hard, as you know, to find a taildragger to rent so that's not really an option. As long as you don't have to sell a kidney or completely mortgage your future - why wait for spring, do it now!

Pop...

I recall you're in Alberta

Right now there are some killer deals (25k and under) on older light aircraft and homebuilts...check it out, but be sure anything (including the Cub) you get a pre purchase on that is done from someone you trust.

If you're heart is already set on the Cub and it ain't gonna break you...buy it.

And I prefer grass strips and tail draggers

Never shoulda sold my Cessna 120 or my VP2...

Beef, I mean Pop N....

Wish you find the best Cub out there. If you end up convincing missus on a larger amount look at cubcrafters.
I am working on the RV7 (very beginning stage) so we can trade planes once I visit Alberta or you visit Onterible one day. :D
You might need a cover for the tube and fabric machine.

Have you considered a Champ instead? 2 usable seats and a little wider/more comfortable all around. Performance is basically the same, and they cost less. Less nostalgia I guess.

What would be a rough guide to operating cost per hr and Insurance costs on the Champ?

I was giving that aero commander Voltaire the shifty eyes earlier in the month.

I am not set on a cub but have really started liking them recently. I would like something with a stick. Again not a must, I change my mind way too often.

You know I know better.

Dan an RV-8 could be an option. Probably a bit better suited for me in case my son starts liking too many hamburgers as he gets bigger every day.

BBB you're right, I should rent. I do like the idea that if I wake up and have to, I could on a nice day, call work and announce, "Sorry but something came up. I should be in later. Possibly tomorrow." My current lose plan involves renting nose draggers next year and trying to fly so much it would have been cheaper to buy. 100 hours. I suspect I won't do it.

Upon further investigation for me the choice would come down to specific a unit.

Of course you have to drive out to use it..... but that would be less time than it would be to drive out to Springbank and then to taxi, takeoff, and vacate the control zone.

That would be more tempting if last summer's plan of bringing my kids and the wife's trailer by to visit had worked out.

I'm currently deciding if I want to go back three posts and fix the "lose" vs. "loose" spelling mistake.
Although it is fitting as I will likely lose my little hundred hour self challenge. I better start with one hour per month and see if I can do that.

Always refreshing to hear stories from people who have had an on-again / off-again relationship with flying. I popped my wad getting my PPL a few years ago and since then, I am simply too broke to justify flying. Haven't been up for the last 14 months. Have pretty much consoled myself that I may not begin flying again until I retire ( about 7 years away ) and even then, it is uncertain. I don't even have the excuse of a new house or a new kid. Just so hard for me to justify the expense.

In short, I don't see anything wrong with you. 8)

Yep, if you can wade though my lovable brand of crazy. It should be apparent.
  • I love cars/airplanes/motorcycles
  • I love food too much
  • the other side of married looks better from which ever side you're on
It's been 18 months too many since piloting an aircraft for me this time. If I only had $7billion and an airplane I'm pretty sure I could have stayed current. I'm probably wrong about that too.

I moved from Eastern Ontario to the GTA which has been pretty awful for both riding (Scared of Toronto drivers) and flying ... trying to figure out which GTA airport has a nice GA community ...

How close are you to that Island? Probably priced accordingly but looked fun from the videos I've seen.*

Someone talk some sense into me quick before I get beat up for saying semper fi and general poseury.

I R Pilot!

Post by Pop n Fresh »

Phew, they sold that one. Good thing because none of you stepped in to intervene.

I went out this morning to see if I could fly at all and it went so well it turned into a sucesful renters check. I'm cleared for solo. I guess I'll fly a bit more in 2014 then see if I can beat 25 hours next year.

I thought I would be much more rusty after spending this year fishing instead of flying.

I partially blame my increased skills on, this forum, particularly Shinysideup and the Bad Man™. Thanks.

Tough to beat the performance per dollar of a Navion.... if you can ignore the maintenance and fuel costs and the potential problems.

Rumour had it that some North American representatives were given the tour of the Beech factory in Wichita just after WWII and upon seeing the new Bonanza... they phoned back to Los Angeles and said 'we're finished'.
