Re: Landsdowne House. Right Now?
Anyone know if they got these guys out? From what I heard on the radio it was YDK and that the mayday was for an engine failure. TC's site says that is a Wilson's Stationary Cessna 206. I really hope they are ok and aren't spending the night in the bush.

A Hercules aircraft from 17 Wing Winnipeg was called in while on a training mission Tuesday to take part in a search and rescue after a small plane crashed in northern Ontario.
The CC-130 Hercules, part of the 435 Transport and Rescue Squadron from 17 Wing, was preparing for a simulated search and rescue when it was tasked by the Joint Coordination Centre in Trenton, Ont., to locate a downed aircraft near Lansdowne House, Ont., a news release from the Canadian Forces said.
The Hercules flew to the crash site, a few kilometres south of Lansdowne House, and crews spotted people walking near the scene.
Search and Rescue (SAR) Technicians in the Hercules dropped a message bundle, which contained a radio, to the downed flight crew and determined there were no major injuries, the Forces release said. The Hercules remained in the area until an Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources helicopter picked up the people and flew them to the airport at Lansdowne House.
"Those guys were well-prepared," said Capt. Kevin Coulombe, commander of the Hercules that located the crash site. "They had a fire going, they had food and water, they had a tent set up, and they were ready.
"They had a 406 beacon, which transmits a GPS location to a satellite. It gives a tail number and even information about who is flying the aircraft," said Coulombe.
Also known as Neskantaga First Nation, an Oji-Cree First Nation, Lansdowne House is 560 kilometres north of Thunder Bay.

Re: Landsdowne House. Right Now?
It's always good to hear, especially that the guys had a fire going, a tent set up, and were a going concern especially this time of year. Pilots should never forget their bush-craft. Well done!
If I'd known I was going to live this long, I'd have taken better care of myself
Re: Landsdowne House. Right Now?
That's great. This has to be the worst time of year to do a forced approach because even though it's freezing cold you can't trust the ice. Anyone have any thoughts of what's best to touchdown on right now? Clearings could have swamp and liquid water under the snow and ice. The last thing you want is to get soaking wet when it's -17 and howling wind. Looks like they went into small trees by chance or by design which may be your best bet.

It's to be hoped that you got the photocopiers fixed first! LOL! Happy you're all safe. CheersFirebird67 wrote:Thank you for all being concerned, as the pilot of the aircraft I can say we walked away with a few bruises and no serious injuries.

Re: Landsdowne House. Right Now?
This accident forum is pretty tough to read sometimes. It sure is nice to see one with such a good ending.
Re: Landsdowne House. Right Now?
"A14C0170: The privately registered Cessna U206F (removed regristration), operating on wheels with the pilot and one passenger, was enroute on a 40 nm trip from CYFH Fort Hope to CYLH Lansdowne House, Ontario. Approximately midpoint, the pilot noted low oil pressure. The pilot elected to continue to destination and monitored the engine gauges. There was a loud noise coincident with a loss of power. The aircraft was unable to maintain altitude and attempts to regain power were unsuccessful. The pilot performed the "Forced landing without power" checklist from memory and the engine (Continental IO-520) was shutdown. The pilot made a mayday call and activated a Spot Locator and the ELT. RCC Trenton subsequently tasked a C-130 Hercules from Winnipeg. A forced landing was performed into a selected area consisting of a lightly treed, frozen marsh. The aircraft came to rest against a stand of trees and was substantially damaged. The pilot and passenger had utilized seatbelts and shoulder harnesses and evacuated the aircraft uninjured. The pilot and passenger returned to the aircraft to retrieve survival gear and a camp was prepared. A ground signal was laid out and signal flares were fired when aircraft were observed overhead. The Hercules arrived overhead and dropped a radio that the pilot used to communicate medical and equipment status. The pilot and passenger were later evacuated by helicopter."
When I hear loss of oil pressure in the cold weather, I always wonder if there was a whistle slot in the breather. The Colonel posted something in the past about this.

Holy crap, that is impressive ! Congratz !Firebird67 wrote:http://thedrydenobserver.ca/2014/11/wil ... neskataga/

As an AvCanada discussion grows longer:
-the probability of 'entitlement' being mentioned, approaches 1
-one will be accused of using bad airmanship
