Was thinking about this the other day as I happened to, as I am want to do, peer through the windows of other airplanes parked on the ramp. So here's a question and the rules for today's thread:

What plane(s) have you always wanted to try?

What planes are we talking about? Ones you see everyday. For the responses, they have to be flying ones, so no museum pieces or fantasy picks. Planes you see on a regular basis. Maybe something another company flies, someone's bird in the tie down spot or hangar next to yours, those guys you run into at the FBO and have probably chatted them up about it, but you've never had any time at the stick.

Anyhow, here's my picks.

Piper Aerostar. Never flew one, though I can't say I've flown a lot of light twins, I've flown the Cessnas and the trainer Pipers, and even the rare Grumman. The Aerostar just looks built for speed instead of compromise (the Seneca and Seminole are just twin cherokees, the Cessna 300/400s are sporty, but certainly not revolutionary.) There's one that shows up around here and I hear it goes to Mexico sometimes. That sounds like a capital idea.

Commander 114. I know, maybe some pedestrian choices, but recall the rules. There's one I see at a nearby field all the time, doesn't seem to fly much, but was getting its annual I saw the other day. Looks like it should have a bigger engine, but still manages to stand out. Big cabin for a small plane.

Bellanca Viking. I can't help but marvel over the wing of these things whenever I see one, a work of art. There's a gorgeous red and black one that's around here.

Oh dear, now I'm a bit sad, I'm having trouble coming up with any "next to the tiedown" ones. A Turbine Aero Commander seems like fun. If I think more broadly, a Twin Otter amphibian, and CL 415. Anything else I think of qualifies as a museum piece (Fiesler Storch & PBY).

My dream plane, from when I was a kid, and first saw the photo in Jane's, was the Siai Marchetti 1019. So odd and rare (and Italian military) I doubted that I would ever even see one. Then one day a client told me a "Turbine Bird Dog" was coming for me to test fly... Sure enough! I lived the dream for a couple of weeks.

The Bellanca Viking is totally worth the effort to get to fly one, awesome plane. The 114 is nice too, Cadillac comfy.

However, what you REALLY want to try is the Aerostar Jet. I was lucky enough to get 10 minutes at the controls at an Aerostar convention a few years ago.

Lake Buccaneer.

I rebuilt one ten years ago, never even got a ride in it. It has since crashed (glassy water). I always thought lots of the design features were really neat.... like the hydraulically powered trim 'flippers', the water rudder incorporated into the air rudder, the all push-pull tube flight controls.....

Piper Cub.

Yeah, I have one.... and every day I imagine what it will be like to fly. I'll be in the shop.... moving the stick and making airplane noises.....

Boeing 727.

I don't see this one every day now.... but used to work on them full time. The nose section of the very first one I started up is actually in a museum in Hamilton. I love the 'everything is mechanical' aspect of it, the 'somewhat' unique configuration (only shared by the HS Trident, the Tu-154, and the Yak-40). I had just about every system and every switch and instrument memorized on it at one point.... and my heart still skips a beat when I see one... which is rare for a jet to make me do.

Funny how just about all of these are coming from a MX perspective.....

For me...

Piper cub. Lol. Spent two years fixing those beasts... One word (okay two) floor boards.

Beech craft travel aire. Yup, nice plane but what a bitch to work on.

Husky. Bang your head on those flap hangars once and tell me you still love it.

Pawnee: oh the stench, and the rep as a flying bbq (nice fuel tank location)

Its weird mx never makes me want to fly a plane.. it makes me want to see them fly away.

Did an air combat thing in the SF260. Was fun till I got sick. Really strong prestall buffet.

It is a good question, there are so many GA airplanes I would love to try and get another chance to fly in again, I would not know where to begin....would love to hop in a brand new fully tweaked out SR22T, would love to try a super cub, +1 for the TBM850

I guess this is all fun to try these birds, but really for me I think it would be the whole experience to actually be able to have an adventure. Hop in a plane and head out somewhere new and exciting. Get to fly and see some new scenery, visit new towns/countries. Share the moment with some great friends. That can easily let you have more fun at the controls of a 172 then doing loops around your town in a TBM for 15 minutes.

I'm also down for the Lake Buccaneer. Always been fascinated with flying boats. I can imagine landing on a secluded lake somewhere, popping the glass and just busting out the fishing rod from the pilots seat

And to feed my love of Russian aircraft, would be awesome to get a ride in a Yak-18t!

I don't understand why everyone is so picky. Must be something that happens when you have to fly for a living

If it's got wings on it I want to fly it. Heck, parasails don't even have wings and I like flying those.

Yep. I charged my pharmacist for an hour to fly his son's 150 about six months ago... and I still haven't flown it. I dunno... I guess I am picky...

Yep Picky.. because I can be? Maybe cause I am spoiled and have flown my dream airplane, the one I wanted to fly more than anything else, but that said, if I had the chance there are a few I would like to give a go.

Harmon Rocket... one at the Hangar in Stoney Creek, talked to the owner a couple weeks ago... working on the chance.

Citabria... don't know why, just want to.. and a blue one specifically.

Lear.. doesn't matter which one too much. Just want to see if they handle as nice as I have heard. Rumour is they are about as close as you get to military jet type handling in a civvy plane... just want to compare and see if it is true.

I know it may not be very creative, but I did an undergraduate project a long ass time ago on the Piper Arrow III's landing gear and after several months of studying maintenance manuals, the POH, and flight data I would have given anything to actually fly it.

So many aircraft and many of those mentioned I've flown or instructed others in.. The Husky...Love it; The Rockwell 112Turbo Alpine and 114 comfortable but need more juice. Had 1/2 share I a J-3, Tiger Moth, Chipmunk, Grumman AA1A, and about 80 more. Like the CF-104D..no that has lottsa juice!!!!!!!!!!!

ut the Falco is one that I would love to fly. Saw 2 of tem do a low level airshow at Saarbrucken, Germany and it was inspiring. Too many planes...too little time

Maule M7, there's a really nice red and white one on amphibs seems to hang around in Pitt Meadows and Langley from time to time. I'd like to fly it on floats and wheels, just to get a good sense of the STOL capabilities, and taildraggers are awesome.

Harvard, there's a bunch at Boundary Bay, just a neat old aircraft.

DHC-2 Beaver, iconic bush plane. Seems to be a good half-dozen or more on the field at Pitt Meadows these days, would like to fly it on floats and wheels, for the experience. And who doesn't want to get some -985 time anyway? And the DHC-2T that is in the large hangar at YPK, beautiful bird...

Lancair 360, seen her around Pitt, and seen it overtake us in a 172 while we were departing towards Death Valley, man that is a fast aircraft.

Vans, I'd like to try out the RV-7 and RV-8. They all look like very fast, capable aircraft. The question of course becomes what is more practicable, tandem seating, or side by side...

Probably many more aircraft that I've seen in passing in the Lower Mainland and elsewhere, but those are the ones that I come to mind now.
