PAPI (P1/P2/P3) info

Post by loopa »

Hey, I don't have a CFS right in front of me... but where can one find information about what type of PAPI is used for the airport you're shooting an approach to? Is it in the CFS?

I was under the impression that all PAPI's in Canada are P2, unless otherwise specified. Just curious where this info is specified... CFS? I couldn't find this info in the CFS the other day but maybe I was looking in the wrong spot
Any insight would be greatly appreciated!

It's in the CFS, it's in the lighting column.

If you're in the IFR game, approach charts show the PAPI info as well.

Jeppesen charts do? I realise the CAPS do after looking at them. Can't find any PAPI info on the jeppesen approach plates though.

Jepps have it on the Airport page in the Additional Runway Information box.
Additional Runway Information
Some of the required airport information cannot be portrayed in enough detail by using only the airport diagram. This type of information is shown below the airport diagram in the box titled “Additional Runway Information.” The second column in this box includes lighting details for each runway. Some of the most common lighting installations included in the lighting column are runway lights, approach lighting systems, touchdown zone lights, and VASI or PAPI installations. Runway visual ranges (RVRs), when installed, are also included with the runway light information.

loopa, not all PAPIs in Canada are P2. You will be surprised how many P1's there are. What vrrotate said-on the approach plate you can find a little airport diagram where the AP P1, P2 and P3 is depicted. The position of the PAPI, whether it is left or right of center line is also depicted(usually on the left). There was a Hawker Siddley accident a couple years ago in Quebec where the pilots assumed the PAPIs were on a certain side of the runway, but actually landed on the snow if I can recall? Red Lake has P1, Pickle Lake has P1 whereas Peterborough ONT has P2 for RWY 09. Bigger airports and runways usually mean a higher P rating for the eye to wheel height.

True. The PAPIs/VASIS are almost always on the left side but occasionally on the right. In poor vis/whiteout conditions, especially at smaller airports where the runway lights may not be easy to see, you might maneuver yourself on the wrong side of them. A good idea to make note of what side they are on.

I found an old CFS online from 2009 but the lighting details in the GEN section are still the same. Go to page A80.

Thanks guys!

Yea I was reading a TSB report on a Dash 8 that followed the wrong set of papi's that didn't turn out too well... had a tail strike.

Great insight, I will definitely be on the outlook for which side the PAPI's are on.
