Alberta sells three planes from its fleet
February 26, 2015 Media inquiries
Alberta is closer to being out of the airline business with the sale of three of four planes in the government air fleet.
Fargo Jet Centre Inc. of Fargo, North Dakota was the successful bidder by offering nearly $6.1 million for the three King Air aircraft. This exceeded the minimum bid price by approximately $600,000, or 11 per cent.
“Considering there is a limited market for some of these planes and the economy is tight, especially in western Canada, we are pleased to have sold three of the aircraft at a fair price.”
Stephen Khan, Minister of Service Alberta
The three planes that sold were:
• A 2006 Beechcraft King Air B200;
• A 2006 Beechcraft King Air B200; and
• A 1997 Beechcraft King Air 350.
Sealed tenders were opened on February 24 and reviewed by Service Alberta, the ministry responsible for selling surplus government equipment.
A 1985 DeHavilland Dash 8-103 did not receive a bid that complied with the criteria of the Invitation to Tender. The government is looking at options including re-tendering the remaining plane and the related inventory of spare parts and tools.

Let me get this right. In the first go around, they didn't sell and the consensus was that they were overpriced.

Now they sold at 11% over asking price? I'm thinking somehow, Albertans just paid for those planes again.

No, not exactly; this was still the "first go around". The news reports about not getting any bids didn't say that the deadline had come and gone, they just meant that up to that arbitrary point in time no one had placed a bid and the price might have to be reduced. Someone put in a bid just before the deadline, probably waiting to see if anyone else was interested, and it's possible a number of people did the same. They all put in their offers at the last minute to keep from being out-bid, and the government sold them for more than asking price. Not everything is a grand conspiracy.

I hate to split hairs but...
and the government sold them for more than asking price
Actually in a tender (or auction for that matter they are over the minimum reserve set by the government. Minimum reserve is typically considered the minimum price they are willing to live with (loss or not) as opposed to an asking price.

The question is did they reach, what those who know more than me, would consider fair market value? Seems light to me (from looking in controller and such) but I am no expert by any stretch on aircraft market values.

Just sayin
