Instructor rating?

Post by JohnnyHotRocks »

If someone had a class 4 instructor rating twenty years ago and has not instructed since, what is the process for making that rating valid again?

I genuinely don't want to come off like an ass but it's going to sound that way.

That information is in the CARs, a document that every instructor should be comfortable with navigating. My gut says Part IV: Personnel Licensing and Training and since it's a practical kind of question I bet the answer is in the Standards.

I found this probably faster than it took lownslow to come off as an ass....

"...Candidates whose ratings have been expired in excess of 24 months must submit a completed "Flight Crew Licence - Application for Endorsement" (Form 26-0083) signed within the preceding 30 days by the holder of a valid Class 1 instructor rating - aeroplane, helicopter, or aerobatic, as appropriate - recommending the candidate for an instructor flight test. They must also have successfully completed the appropriate written examination(s) within the preceding 24 months."

Hopefully that will steer you in the right direction

Good work, Maynard.

Lowandslow, 20 years ago they didn't have "CARS". They had the "Air Navigation Orders" and the "Air Regulations". You could also look stuff up in the "A.I.P." Maybe Johnny Hotrocks doesn't even know about the C.A.R.S.!!

This was before Transport Canada became a branch of the F.A.A.

Maybe so, but they do now and those are the rules we have to abide by. A quick googling will find the CARs and beyond that I got him pretty darn close.

Perhaps I'm just frustrated by all the spoon-feeding that goes on now in flight instruction, but I do mean well. I'll go back to yelling at clouds now.

Um.

Let's see.

Did you hold an instructor rating twenty years ago?
Have you heard of the CARs?

If not, on whose behalf are you asking?
Enquiring minds need to know.

If it is two years or thirty years it does not make any difference.
Written Exam(s), ride .

Once you go past a few years without using it, it is rather intimidating
when you start dusting the cobwebs but one you do the appropriate review
and practice then its like riding bike.

The longer you are out of it, the more study you will have to do.
The practical side will probably be the easiest.

The biggest concern you should have is can you make enough money in a given day to pay for the gas to drive to and from the airport?

Cool- don't let them charge you for a C182 "type rating" though :-)

They have a poor reputation on AvCanada:

I understand they, do, er "checkouts" for a lot of pilots - charging a goodly rate per hour, then only employ one.
Go in with your eyes open.
