Now that's an odd looking plane.

What do you expect when two metro's make love with an early generation '47 get bored and ask an Ercoupe to join in on the "action"?Meatservo wrote:Now that's an odd looking plane.
Re: Transair
Nice thing about the Argosy is the front swings open so you could drive vehicles right inside or load freight quite easily.

Some really interesting stories and info in this link:

Hiding a 707 around the high arctic from creditors, (in addition to other events to keep the company alive) makes for interesting discussion!

Wikipedia Transair (Canada)
From Wikipedia
In April 1973, Transair, then Canada's fourth largest airline, hired Rosella Bjornson as the first female First Officer. Bjornson flew the Fokker F28 jet. She was the first woman to be hired by a commercial airline in Canada, and the first woman member of the Canadian Air Line Pilots Association.

Re: Transair
Not sure how this Belanca fits in but there it is. When I started taking flying lessons in 1972 Rosella Bjornson was a flight instructor at the Winnipeg Flying Club. She left for Transair about that time. Transair used to fly gold from Red Lake to Winnipeg in a DC-3. A guy named Ken Leishman met the flight in about 1966, not sure exactly, backed his truck up to the plane and they loaded the gold for him and off he went......a wealthier man for sure. I met ken in Red Lake many years ago. Nice guy, after he got out of prison he became the president of the Red Lake chamber of Commerce and was a partner in an airservice in Red Lake and bid on the contract to haul the very gold that he stole. There's a book about him called "The Flying Bandit", great read.

Re: Transair
Good old Transair/Midwest. I remember back in the early 70s biking up to the old hangars and seeing the fleet. Had a great time watching the planes taxi by on 'Charlie' taxiway. Also watched Rosie do her touch and goes in the new F-28 that Transir and just received.
Re: Transair
Rose, now retired, flies the Cessna 170 her dad bought new in 48. They both paid me a visit year. Great couple.

Re: Transair
Seeing that this is AvCanada. When PWA bought Transair in 1979 how was the pilot seniority lists merged ? Was there any acrimony between the groups after it was done ? How did this effect the Transair pilots when PWA bought Canadian then later merged into Air Canada. Are there any ex Transair pilots still at Air Canada ?

Re: Transair
Transair and Wpg Flying club -- what was one without the other -- many stories and memories - I spent time at both --
Couple of interesting facts -- looking at the pic of the F/A's - short skirts but when it came to the hot pants they refused --
Dryden and Sioux Lookout -- Sioux Lookout was a Transair Base and when Transair decided to get into the "airline" biz -- the town Fathers of Sioux were approached to improve their airport and extend the runway which was 2800 feet at the time - along with their refusal to do so and Alex Wilson in Dryden pushing for his hub of the north dream the airport was built in Dryden and saw jet service for several years -
Like Nordair Transair's initial growth was due to mid canada line and they even operated mozzies at one time -- it certainly was an era in Canadian aviation --

That was truly an entertaining read, thanks for that! It's fascinating to hear the insight of other posters here as well.blockheater wrote:Some really interesting stories and info in this link:

Re: Transair
One of the best stories that has become urban legend is about the captain who had a new F/A convinced that she come up to the flight deck and cycle the flap handle up on the DAK when even someone used the lav-- this was to flush the toilet -- all went well until one day she is flying with Rosy (Doug Rose) -- as the story goes she came up - moved the flap and up and back to neutral -- well what happened next was a very loud and animated WTF are you doing -- poor F/A had no idea that she was doing something wrong -- and Rosy almost burst a blood vein -- anyway that is how it was passed down to me -------
