A320 Level-D sim, YVR
Hi all
Long time reader, first time poster, and I find myself in need of some info. Is there a Full Flight Level-D sim for the Airbus A320 in Vancouver (or SEA) that you know of? CAE doesn't have one yet, and won't for the next few months.
Thank you very much in advance

Yeah I think so. I hear paying for your type rating is the next best thing in Canadian aviation.

The company that you work for will provide you with the location and date of the A320 sim that you will be required to train on. It's pretty straight forward, just enjoy your time off in the meantime.flyboynik wrote:Hi all

Actually, I've been on the line in South America on the very same plane for just over a year now. Was wondering if there is an a sim in YVR in order to get my TR on my Canadian license as well, since i'll be there in August. I'd only need a session and a check-ride. Anyway, anyone have the info? CAE there apparently doesn't have one yet.
thanks

Why do you need it on your Canadian licence? Pardon my ignorance, but I would think that with time on type, if you were looking to get a job on that same machine here in Canada, whether or not you had that type on your Canadian licence or not would be irrelevant, as the company who hired you would get you trained up anyways.
On another note (again, please excuse my ignorance) but does a type rating under another licence (FAA, JAA, etc) not transfer over to a Canadian licence?

I know FAA to TCCA is an easy enough conversion but not sure about JAA to TCCA.

If you've been on the aircraft for the past year I assume that you have at least 50 hours. Take a look at 421.40 (5) (b) Type Ratings, Credits for Foreign Applicants:flyboynik wrote:Actually, I've been on the line in South America on the very same plane for just over a year now. (b) Pilot Proficiency Check Requirement
The holder of a licence with a two-crew type rating issued by a Contracting State shall be considered to have met the Pilot Proficiency Check requirement specified in 3(a)(iii), 3(b)(iii), 3(f)(iii), and 3(g)(ii) above provided the applicant has acquired a minimum of 50 hours flight time on that aircraft type during the 12 months preceding the application for the rating.

If you plan to find a job in Canada, you'll still be required to complete the company ground school/indoc/SOP training etc. With time on type, it shows you know what you're doing (I hope) and therefore would be considered a good candidate for hire even without a current "Canadian" TR. They will put you through the SIM at their cost, in their time frame, with the instructors they want teaching you.
My word of advice... find a job and let them take care of it.
That is, unless you want to try to go for one of those "current TR required" jobs at Sunwing. In any case, they are hiring people there now without current TR's so you're just wasting your money.

Thank you all so much for your replies. They've been tons of help. I was totally unaware of the CAR. The reason I was asking is because I'll be in YVR for a few days, and my Canadian IFR has expired since Jul 2013. So I figured since I'm there I'll renew it, and seeing as the only a/c I'm current on is the A320 (haven't flown a twin for about 3 years now), and have limited time, I could kill two birds with one stone, and get the TR and IFR at once.
Again, thanks everyone for your replies

Yes that's a possibly but you will be passing through your nose for it. Check out Pacific Flying Club, you can do a ride there on a nice Alsim that's a full king air cockpit.

I would save my money.
Getting a type rating put on your Canadian license is just paperwork. (Although when I did it you needed to request the TR within one year of your initial training.)
I recomend that you just let the IR lapse. The important part is not having to write the INRAT again when or if you return to Canada.
CAR 421.49(6) has you covered there.
I did this for a decade while flying for an airline in Brazil. I never had any problem with renewing my IR in Canada after I left the airline.
I am assuming that you are still employed with your company and merely wish to renew your Canadian IR just for the sake of not having to write the INRAT again.

You've all been tons of help! THANK YOU
My concern was the exactly the one mentioned by TTJ: not having to re-write the INRAT. But again, thanks! You've cleared away all my questions!
