PC12 Accident Griffith Island Ontario
Just saw TSB deployed to PC12 accident at Griffith Island, On. Any news?
Re: PC12 Accident Griffith Island Ontario
I've looked, and no news to be found, I'll keep an eye with interest. Griffith Island is a nice place, but the runway has fewer than normal options....

Any word on whether it was a private or commercial pc12?
Also, is that airport on the map? I am having trouble locating it

Re: PC12 Accident Griffith Island Ontario
Nothing in today's CADORS - no other word at all.
Nice video landing winter time at Griffith Island's 2700' grass (snow covered) strip.
From TSB; Griffith Island is located on the southwest side of Georgian Bay near Bruce Peninsula, approximately 10 nautical miles east of Wiarton, Ontario. The island has a single grass strip runway (09/27), which is 2700 feet long and 130 feet wide, and is located on a hill on the southeast side of the island, at a field elevation of 625 feet asl. The approach to Runway 27 is over the water, and the threshold is approximately 460 feet from the waters edge

Re: PC12 Accident Griffith Island Ontario
Griffith Island runway can be found at N44 50, W80 54, at the south east corner of the island. It's a beautiful runway, very well cared for. It's PPR, so I've only been in a couple of times with the PP at the time. I used to frequent the runway at White Cloud Island, next to the west, which is rather more challenging. Griffith has the slight challenges of an over the water approach, and the the prospect of mechanical turbulence with the common prevailing north west wind, but otherwise is very inviting.

Re: PC12 Accident Griffith Island Ontario
I believe some models of the legacy PC-12 had the "biglets". The NG has almost a raked wingtip as opposed to winglets. It's definitely not an ng.

I don't think so.rigpiggy wrote:NG
I look at PC12 winglets all day and those ain't any pre or post sn 684 winglets I've ever seen.

Huh, are those biglets a pilatus option or someone else's product? Wonder if they actually make a difference vs the factory ones.jpilot77 wrote:I believe some models of the legacy PC-12 had the "biglets". The NG has almost a raked wingtip as opposed to winglets. It's definitely not an ng.
Re: PC12 Accident Griffith Island Ontario
I've only flown the NG but I heard the large winglets really mad the PC-12 a handful in a crosswind. Also I heard they were a standard On some models. Just can't remember which one.

Re: PC12 Accident Griffith Island Ontario
Been a couple of days. There has to be some news on whether it was a private or commercial aircraft.
It must have been a pretty serious hard landing if TSB is going to investigate.
Any news?

Re: PC12 Accident Griffith Island Ontario
Maybe they're investigating because it's in Southern Ontario.
Re: PC12 Accident Griffith Island Ontario

I think this pretty much sums up why the TSB would get involved.
Kowalski: Sir, we may be out of fuel.
Skipper: What makes you think that?
Kowalski: We've lost engine one, and engine two is no longer on fire.

Re: PC12 Accident Griffith Island Ontario
This is an Air Sprint machine. I flew it once. I think it was the one based in YOW. The older PC12s had the larger winglets. Newer ones had smaller ones and the NG have the blended wing. From what I remember the reduced induced drag was offset by the high parasite drag hence newer models had smaller winglets and the NG had the blended ones.Axial Flow wrote:Found a picture of a PC12 at Griffith Island in happier times!
It's been MANY years and my manuals are packed in a box somewhere so I reserve the right to be wrong.

Yup, first batch of PC-12s had the larger winglets.
Re: PC12 Accident Griffith Island Ontario
Could this be the PC12? Filed to Wiarton and continued VFR? C-GECT

Re: PC12 Accident Griffith Island Ontario
The Private Air Inc. Pilatus PC-12/47E aircraft (C-GECT) was landing at the grass strip on Griffith
Island. There were two pilots and four passengers on board. The approach was stable but cross
wind conditions at the island were reported to be between 25-40 knots from the south west; the
grass strip is in an east to west direction. During the flare, the right wing dropped and contacted the
ground. The aircraft continued with the landing and after stopping on the runway all occupants
exited with no injuries. During the subsequent walk around it was noticed that the outer four feet of
the right wing was bent upward and that the right aileron had been disconnected at the outer bell
crank. Two TSB investigators were dispatched to the site for evaluation of the event.
