Headset suggestion

Post by currysonic »

Hi all!

For most of my flying time I've used a crummy little Peltor Headset that gives me headaches after almost every flight and a mic boom you have to hold up with your lower lip. I've finally had enough and decided to shell out some major dough (<$500 :smt040 ) to get a decent headset. I was hoping to get some feedback from you all.

So far I've round it down to

DC H10-20
https://www.aircraftspruce.ca/catalog/a ... h10_20.php

SENNHEISER S1 Passive
https://www.aircraftspruce.ca/catalog/a ... enns1p.php

Or any sub $500 headset that might be good for the next thousand hours or two... or three maybe even four haha! Thanks in advance for your input!

I saw someone on here is selling a used Telex Stratus 50D. I'd go for that.

I bought a DC H20-10 3 years ago and have enjoyed it a lot for my recreational flying, but I haven't put the kind of time you're talking about on it to be fair.

DC H10-20 is what I bought new when I first got my private... Built like a tank, it survived 16 years of flying including some 5000 hours in Metros. ANR wasn't readily available at the time, but it was a very reliable headset. Ear seals and mike socks were the only things I replaced. Retired it from duty when I jumped to jets 8 years ago. It holds a lot of memories and it still works perfectly.

Just make sure whatever headset you get has good support/warranty and comfort. One of your most important purchases to invest in your career. Take your time and do it right.

+1 on the Telex 50D's I've got two pairs and they work extremely well in high noise environments both with the AND and if the batteries run out the passive is good. Very very comfortable.

One thing that may have you rethink Sennheiser is their decision to get out of the aviation headset market. They are only guaranteeing parts and service until the end of the warranty period. After that you may be SOL.

Traded a 6-pack of Heineken for my DC H10-13.4's ... best trade I ever did.

I always suggest looking for something with ANR/ENC that ALSO has good passive. ANR can squeal, pulsate, fail, and batteries can die, so it is good to have that passive noise reduction there.

+1 For DCs - bullet proof.

I have a set for each family member - I highly recommend searching EBay for what you require. With some patience, I paid no more than 50% of retail, for product that has worked to spec (just a few cosmetic scratches). Even got an ANR version for < $300.

I'd recommend a Bose Aviation X headset, they can be had used or refurbished for the $300-$400 range if you look around, some shops still have the odd pair lying around.

Lots on E-Bay.

They are active noise reduction, they don't have the fancy bluetooth and such but are very comfortable and quiet for the price.

I've got the latest A20's and they are pretty slick, big chunk of change, but I find I am much more relaxed not straining to hear a poor transmission or being fatigued by the noise in a loud cockpit.

I know it's not on your list but I'd suggest trying to find a reman or used Zulu/Zulu2. You can find them for around $500-$600 used. Great headset, love mine.

I would recommend either a zulu 2 or the bose. My decision to go with the Zulus were only because my rather large noggin and I felt the zulus were more comfortable because of that. As for the noise cancelling, I couldn't tell them apart.

I tested both the A10's and the Zulu 2s. Found the Zulus were much more comfortable on my head, less of a clamping force and felt much better quality for the in hand feel. Are then? Don't know... they just feel solid and have never let me down. Got shy of 800 hours on them now with no warranty problems.

None of my passengers have ever complained about sitting the back seat with the DC if that means anything :)

Front seat passengers get the Lightspeed. Of which I will not buy another one, had an issue with their poor customer service.

Priorities:
#1. Comfort! Bose give me a headache after about 2 hours. I love my Zulus. My head is a weird shape, so go try them all.
#2 Passive noise reduction. Batteries die, can't easily change them half way down an ILS.
#3 Bluetooth. Can't count the number of times I'm talking to dispatch/flight service on the phone after I've started the engines. Much easier to do through the headset.

Has anyone ever tried one of the discount/rebranded ANR sets like the following Aircraft Spruce ANR model:

http://www.aircraftspruce.ca/catalog/avpages/skycom.php

Have used my passive DC's for a decade and love the fit, was thinking of doing the Headsets Inc ANR mod to them, but for almost no incremental cost can get one of the above ANR headsets and keep the DC's passive as a spare.

I should have bought a nicer headset earlier before the Canadian Dollar dropped so much!

I've put a Headsets Inc ANR kit in my DC 13.4's over 10 years ago and it still works great! Never had a problem. I would not want to use an non-ANR headset again.

Agreed! I bought the DC H10-13.4 during flight training. A few months later I borrowed a friends ANR headset and bought one the next day.

This is the most economical way to get into a good performing ANR, have been running two sets of these in DCs for years. Now they can be had with an auto-shutoff and low battery warning power box for the ridiculous premium of something like $10.00

Unless you want a super light headset can't see why you'd need anything else.

PS Just noticed this: http://www.avcanada.ca/forums2/viewtopi ... 3&t=106716, add the Heads Sets Inc modules and you're well within your budget

I think I'd go with the Clarks. I know they aren't the be-all and end-all, but like other people, I had a pair of H-10-30s that I bought new in 1994. The arm-rests in my plane are like scissors and cut the wires so many times I eventually got a pair of H-10-13.4s that I bought used from one of my co-pilots. The arm rests cut the wires on these too but at least I've always got a back-up pair. Both still work. The H-10-30s have a bit of a "patina" from my radial-engine days but I continue to be impressed with their longevity.

Anyone have any good suggestions for a jet? I have a dc right now, but I'm looking to get something a little lighter with some notice cancelling features since I'll be sitting in the plane for up to 9 hours.

I have a Zulu and my husband has a Bose and while they are identical in terms of noise cancellation, mine has the better mic. The Bose mic picks up engine noise more, and when the person is talking, the background noise is audible. It's not major, and I may not have even noticed it if I hadn't heard the two together. The Zulu mic, even when you turn the squelch to be super sensitive hardly picks up engine noise at all, and it gives a totally quiet background when I talk.

Loved my David Clark, did the job until I change for the bose A20! worth every penny I spend, wish I I would have bought them in first place (money was short)
If you consider to put some extra money, Bose probably have the best headset on the market, but you will need to pay big money, heard the Zulu are almost as good, but they look weird (and might fit bigger head)

I agree with you, try them! you might prefer the good old david clark to any other brand!
the batterie last long enough and (in the bose) you got a orange and red light that mean change the batteries[next flight], not watch out.... else you will have to change them during final....
