I was wondering that too. Are they calling for a DeoxIT type contact protective compound on the battery terminals?

Vaseline. I'm at work but I'll get the reference next week.

Here it is:

1. When installing the bottom four batteries in the battery case always lubricate the outside of the batteries with a light coat of paste wax, mild soap solution or silicon vacuum grease. Also lubricate the “O” ring at this time.

Yikes.. tight fit! Is there another service letter detailing how to remove them without destroying the case?
I had a joke about vaseline, but probably best save for a different forum..

Silicon grease is not Vaseline...

Vaseline deteriorates rubber after time I think....The Priests always warned me never to use it as lube... :D

Service Letter 0001:

Always let a certified person WHO KNOWS WHAT THEY ARE DOING do maintenance on your ELT.

I once had a plumber try to convince me that there was something mystical about soldering two pieces of pipe together.

Wiki:
Silicone-based lubricants are often used by consumers in applications where other common consumer lubricants, such as petroleum jelly, would damage certain products, such as latex rubber condoms and gaskets on dry-suits. It can be used to lubricate fountain pen filling mechanisms and threads.

Yah...well plumbers make more than me...

If the manufacturer calls for silicone...you should't use Vaseline...

Hi everyone,

Happy new year!

Just to clarify, I was always willing to send the ELT for the battery replacement to an AME. Even if it seems an easy job on my ELT (Dorme & Magolin 6.1): a quick connector battery (http://www.aircraftspruce.com/catalog/a ... acbatt.php) and 4 screws to remove to get access to it. But I don't have the manufacturer manual, so I prefer to send it to a mechanic.

The question was to send it to a regular AME or to send it to an avionic shop. From what I've read an operational test can be done by a regular AME (or a pilot) but a performance test has to be done by an avionic shop.

Question's over anyway as the ELT will be sent to an avionic shop and re-certified as well to match the re-certification and battery change on the scheduled maintenance...

Thanks guys for your inputs,

Greg

FYI Brant Aero was $50 cheaper than Discount on my ELT battery. Plus I was flying by, so I dropped in and they did it on the spot & re-certified it! Discount was backordered.
