Especially now. Only a few left now as it is for gravel work and spare aircraft to fill in as needed.Kosiw wrote:Is 5T still going to keep replacing the old 737-200s with -300s even with the current price of oil affecting business out west ?

So did the first 300 combi go online recently? How many more will get the cut for the big door and at what pace (slow process to make a combi).
And with 7F planning to update their turboprop fleet will 5T do the same ?

Yes it's online now, not sure how many more they are planning. The next ones should go much faster now that they've done the first one, I would suspect under 6 months each now from start to finish.Kosiw wrote:So did the first 300 combi go online recently? I doubt there is any immediate plans to upgrade the few D8's we have any time soon.

I am by no means an expert (or even knowledgeable) in this area, but that 6-month estimate caught my eye....assuming the install is being done under an STC, that's probably longer than it took to assemble the plane at the factory in the first place. Any insight as to whether this is standard for a cargo door on a 300, and if so, why?tbaylx wrote:Yes it's online now, not sure how many more they are planning. Mostly because they haven't been done before in Canada and everyone involved is learning. The time involved will drop the more they do. At the factory they assembled hundreds on expensive factory jigs and assembly lines designed for speed. You can't compare that to a shop with no jigs or factory tooling installing an aftermarket door that involves cutting out a huge hole in the side of the aircraft for the first time.YYZSaabGuy wrote:I am by no means an expert (or even knowledgeable) in this area, but that 6-month estimate caught my eye....assuming the install is being done under an STC, that's probably longer than it took to assemble the plane at the factory in the first place. Re: Canadian North Reductions
Those 300 combi are more of a hassle. The time used to convert a 300 combi from full passenger to a 3 pallet config or the other way around.....
the mechanics can do 2 to 3 conversions on the 200 combi.
Sure get more 300 combi in the future....but expect major delays with the fleet in the morning if there are 2 or more configurations to do at night.

Re: Canadian North Reductions
They are quick change conversions so much more efficient to add and remove seats than the -200.
Re: Canadian North Reductions
How are things going for 5T heading into 2016 in terms of crews and operations ? Did one of the Dash 8s get sold recently? Any update on the 737s..... how many are flying these days ?
Been pretty quiet lately.

Re: Canadian North Reductions
5T just picked up some work for Transat Holidays flying -300's to Cancun and San Jose Del Cabo from YYC and YEG. EnerJet is still flying a decent amount for them aswell.
Re: Canadian North Reductions
If there was ever an opportunity to expand and start a major 3rd carrier in Canada, Canadian North could pull it off. I wonder why they don't see the opportunity like the bozos at Jetlines and Naked airlines or whatever they're called. Just get on with the mergers of the North and assert your territory already. If you snooze you will lose.
Re: Canadian North Reductions
I'm not sure there is room for a 3rd major carrier, if there was a 737-300 is not the aircraft to do it with IMHO.
WJ got hurt by Jetsgo for a few years, they aren't going to make that mistake again. They'll fare match or undercut any new start ups such as New Leaf and drive them out pretty quickly on any competing routes.
5T is sticking with what they know, arctic scheds and charter work where available. Highly likely they'll remain a 100 pilot operation until oil growth returns, whenever that may be.
