Low Timer Jobs in NWO/Manitoba

Post by bearitus »

Hello! I am considering doing a road trip from Eastern Ontario up to NWO and Manitoba in the near future and am interested in the current low timer (CPL/MIFR/IATRA and 300 hours) opportunities in these areas. I would be looking for ramp/dispatch work leading to a flying position later on. Are there good opportunities now or is it better to wait a month or two for the spring hiring to kick off?

Thanks!

Go now. There isn't much of a hiring season here unless you're looking for float jobs. Go to Tbay, Sioux, Red Lake, Winnipeg/St Andrews. Northern Mtb too. Kississing, Missinnipi.. Pine Dock, Gimli... you'll beat all the other road trippers if you go now.

  Try and set your goals a little higher. Look for jobs where you at least fly as well. Do dispatch AND flying or ramp AND flying.

Yeah, I was going to say the same. All the towns I mentioned have employers who will hire right into the plane or pt flying pt dispatch/ramp.

You really should do a search since this has been asked many times before but I'll throw you a bone. Do you have a float rating? Might be an idea to at least go get the bare 7 hour rating. Cost ya $2k but could be the difference between a job and no job.

This is not an exhaustive list.

Floats;
Bamaji
Slate Falls
Atikokan Aero
Rusty Meyers
Kay Air
Excellent Adventures
ShoWalters
Bluewater Aviation
Kenora Air
River Air
Sandy Lake Seaplane Service
Weagamo Air (located in Round Lake)
Alair in St. Theresa (also has wheeled planes)

IFR Jobs;
SkyCare
Superior
LakeSide Aviation
Missinnipi
Kississing
Northern Skies Air
Fast Air (likely 500+ needed)
. (500+)

Take a look on Pilot Career Center and whittle down what area you want to work in. Research all the companies and go there in person. If you spend a good month or two on the road shaking hands I'm nearly %100 positive you will find a flying job. You can also go on the Civil Aviation Register and search for aircraft types within provinces (choose commercial registered planes). Look who owns them and make a list. There are a few operators that are not on PCC and don't really have websites.

SkyCare requires 500 TT for direct entry FO but I heard they need Dispatch/Part Time FO for both bases right now.

Good post, awitzke. bearitus, I would hit the road now but before you go, slap some good winter tires on your car. With a ton of people going to the 705 world at this present moment, your chances are fairly good.

Unfortunately, a lot of new 250 hour pilots tend to have a harder time in Manitoba to land their first turbine gig, since most operators are Medevac and as per MB health require 500TT plus for copilot.

Give Keewatin a call, they do do fast copilot upgrades from dispatching or ground jobs. Fast Air does dispatch or groomer to right seat King Air for charter side until you have 500TT, then they move you to medevacs. Wings over Kissising is another one you can inquire about ground based-to-flight jobs. Missinippi hires dispatchers. Since they only do Medevacs and SPIFR charter and scheds on Navajo, the only way for less than 500 hr guys to get the hours was to sit right seat in the Navajo, but they might get rid of this program. So, unless you have 500TT or more, Ontario would probably be a good place to start digging in more depth before you hit MB.

A lot of my buddies at Perimeter are also leaving to Sky, Jazz and the like, so ramp time is slowly decreasing so now would be a good time to see whats up at the pag.

It is also a good idea to show up in person and see if the CP is in their office to see if they have two minutes to talk. Good luck!

Thanks for the advice everyone! I do not have my float rating so I would be looking for IFR operations only. I was working as a class 4 instructor but am considering switching to ramp/dispatch because of the higher pay and better career progression.

If you have a job right now, that works in your favor. Don't leave it until you find another job, and it should be a flying job. See if you can take two weeks off from work or even a week and go on a very specific road trip. Hit up as many places as you can and then go back to instructing. You shouldn't need to work a dispatch job. Find a flying job.

Unfortunately not, I only managed to average about 20 hours a month since last summer in Vancouver.

Where do you work? Montair?

Go take your resume to PFC if you're after hours.
