Traffic on the Land Side of Airports Regulations
Considering a lot of us here spend too much time at airports, and i wont be taking this as legal advice, i wonder if anyone else has had this scenario before.
My wife dropped me off at YUL to head out for another rotation and we said our see ya laters. Then she totally blew through a stop sign, right in front of a “sûreté de l’aéroport” officer. Naturally he pulled her over and i caught up to see what jackpot my wife got into.
The guy was nice enough, but told us that since the infraction took place at the airport he could give us a ticket under the federal laws and not provincial. It would be under the Traffic on the Land Side of Airports Regulations so it would save somewhere like 60 bucks and no demerit points and also doesn’t show up on your abstract.
The ticket is only 102$ but suddenly i wonder if it would fall into some arbitrary criminal code or weird federal loophole that would bar her from anything in the future. Like a DUI falls under the criminal code and makes your life a nightmare, i don’t know if it would become that heavy, but my google skills show it more as a slap on the wrist... but again, i don’t want it to make travelling to the states or working with children or whatever else gets complicated with a simple mistake. Im probably just wondering for no reason.
Anyone else get a ticket at the airport?

I am not a lawyer, but the below link should take you to the Federal regulation (Traffic on the Land Side of Airports Regulations SOR 2006-102) that pertains to your inquiry. I do not see any reference to the Criminal Code so I am sure your wife will be fine.

Re: Traffic on the Land Side of Airports Regulations
She violated some federal law that's not criminal in nature more than likely. Small federal offenses that offer a fine as punishment are handled through provincial courts through the Contraventions Act (Canada). This is used heavily for the Railways Act for people trespassing on rail lines. If the act she violated isn't criminal in nature, there should be no criminal record (it likely isn't), and it probably wouldn't show on any drivers abstract.

What section was she charged under? I skim read it and didn't see anything relating to stop signs.

Re: Traffic on the Land Side of Airports Regulations
Thanks for some input, i really don't see it having any complications but we all know how little legal details are tedious!
The violation is 8 (1) a:
"8 (1) Subject to subsection (2), the operator of a vehicle shall obey
(a) any instructions displayed on a sign that are applicable to the vehicle"
Just going to pay the thing and get on with life!
