The CS100 competes with the 737-600 and the A318. The CS300 competes with the 737-700 and the A319.
Guess what, Bombardier has already trademarked "CS500".
Once this plane finally starts selling and Bombardier makes some profit, I see it doing exceptionally well. I predict 3 or 4 different versions, the same way there is for the 737 and A320 series.
Should they get government money? Boeing does, Airbus does. Why shouldn't Bombardier? Whether I agree with government sponsored corporations or not, it seems to be the price of admission to compete in this market.
I actually own Bombardier stock, not very much because I make pilot pay, but that's more faith than a lot of people have.
