I've bought a canoe. I've a cessna 182. I've questions.
Hey all,
Bought a canoe in the province next door, Saskatchewan. It's an 16 hour round trip to fetch it. My contacts in the airline world, WJ cargo, will be of no assistance apparently as the my 17' foot canoe is 7' too long to get in the cargo pit. May investigate this further with a tape measure.
I can't see it but any way to get a canoe roped onto a C182 on wheels?
Or anybody heading through Regina westbound for Alberta with a truck or roof rack on their car willing to help a guy out?
Cheers,

Attach winglets and pull it like an unmanned drone. DAR should be able to help you there

Just ... don't forget to airbrush out your registration ...?

Transport truck would be way cheaper than going for it.

The 16 hrs driving would fly by compared to whatever flight time you would spend wondering if you re about to die...
I would say buy some floats for the 182. Then go get it. You'll get two birds stoned at once!
In all seriousness I can't imagine any way it would work on wheels without some major mods.

I would think that the point of owning a canoe is to paddle it. Gear up, and get paddling. I'm sure the waterways connect somehow. Man what an adventure.

Wise advice.
I got a roof rack for my CRX, it'll be enough of an adventure on the highway.

It's illegal as @#$!..... but if you are willing to give it a shot, I will come along for the ride, as long as we don't get caught.x-wind wrote:Hey all,

Similar things have been done, but not cheap or simple. This is a 172 I test flew, and actually you could hardly tell that the pod was there.
But there can be small aerodynamic gotchas. Any boat with a stern goes stern first, or else vortex shedding off the aft end can create violent shaking. I have experienced such vortex shedding flying external mods on both airplanes and helicopters, and it makes you want to be back on the ground fast. Fortunately in helicopters you can hover it back, but not so in a plane. Once while flight testing a Navajo, I had the plane bouncing so much because of the external mod that the wings were visibly flapping, and I was being bumped up and down in my seat. The fix was simple, as I applied two strips of foam rubber tape, at just the right place, and it was then smooth as glass.

Well, if you can get a snowmobile in a Navajo, hell a canoe in a 182's got to be doable.
DAR, what was the purpose of that 172 mod?

Just thinking of how you're going to attach a canoe to a single strut trike, I can't really picture a good way that doesn't put that canoe at a bad angle from the relative wind.
Heck I'm even hesitant to strap a canoe to my 185 amphib

Strap it under the fuselage.

Try contacting one of the outfits or private guys that haul new campers back and forth across the country. I think there is one called Saskatoon Hotshots (or something similar). They sometimes are empty or may have space to tie one on their roof racks. I moves some stuff from Calgary to Ontario a number of years ago and the price was reasonable. Sorry I don't have any contact info anymore

Wow a 17 foot canoe on a CRX? now I see the problem. If would almost be faster paddling with the CRX IN the canoe.
Re: I've bought a canoe. I've a cessna 182. I've questions.
The pod carried optical survey equipment which required a hole bigger than we wanted cut in the floor of the 172, and, removing the pod very quickly returned the plane to its four seat flight training role when it was not surveying.DAR, what was the purpose of that 172 mod?

I will deliver it via the water come breakup. My day-rate is $500
