Fly in camping

Post by halfmilevis »

Good day everyone!

I'm interested in knowing if anyone runs a group of GA pilots that runs some sort of fly in camping event at a grass strip! I think it would be a wicked idea to bring some GA pilots together and fly in for a night of fun. Does anything like this exist? Is anyone interested? With summer coming up I think it would be a lot of fun and some interesting aircraft could show up....

Cheers,

HMV

There's always this little fly-in that happens each year - http://www.eaa.org/en/airventure It's not a grass strip (unless you're an ultralight) but there is camping. There are other GA pilots there. And there are some interesting aircraft that show up.

As for more local type things - what part of the country are you in?

I'm planning on flying to Dawson City, Yukon for Canada day weekend. If I recall it was about 24 hours in the air when I flew my 172 from Brantford.

Seriously though, The guys in BC have a good thing going. Facebook group and website: bcgeneralaviation.com

On the facebook group, they often have impromptu fly-ins at beaches, river sand bars, and remote strips.

Makes me really want a taildragger with big tires....

My preferred spot is Greenland,
I think the word "Awesome" was invented for Greenland! But it's hard to get to, and not entirely welcoming for "weekend" type camping.

Close to that experience is Rapid Lake Lodge, an awesome Canadian experience:

But beyond the capability of GA wheelplanes.

I camped one night on this point of land in this lake in northern Labrador

For more local in Ontario, and when on wheels, consider looking around Killarney.

Ram Falls, Alberta (west of Red Deer) has a grass strip that is well maintained by the local clubs here. The strip is located within the provincial park and camping is available nearby.

Read this Post with interest as I have a campground with an airstrip right on the shores of lake Winnipeg. There are campsites along the gravelled centre grass strip. We have developed the strip a couple years ago with the intention to cater to the flying community. I myself have a Stinson on floats in the summer. If there is any interest out there to do a fly in or barbecue, I would certainly like to hear suggestions. We are 45 minutes flight north of Winnipeg give or take or 200 km to be precise.

Thanks

You can fly in and camp on the apron under your aircrafts wing at CYGB. They also have fire rings and picnic tables if I remember correctly to make it extra cozy.
