The president of the Regional Air Cargo Carriers Association says the escalating pilot shortage could soon be hitting mainstream America where it hurts most. “Millions of Americans are not going to get their online purchases delivered to their front door if the situation does not improve,” RACCA President Stan Bernstein told Global Trade magazine. “Everyone is talking about pilot shortages at the passenger airlines and all the communities that are losing service but they are going to be surprised when what they ordered online isn’t delivered in a timely manner.” Bernstein said small package carriers are expecting to lose a staggering two-thirds of their pilots to attrition in the next year, resulting in route abandonment and downstream layoffs of support employees. The unhappy irony is that the shortage is crippling an industry that is seeing burgeoning demand from the online shopping industry.
“We have talked to a lot of companies and there is one overriding comment,” RACCA Board Chair Tim Komberec told Global Trader. “They have a lot of opportunities for growth but can’t find the pilots to accommodate that growth. The good news is demand is out there.” RACCA blames the 1,500-hour rule for the shortage but it also cited an AOPA study that suggests only about 29 percent of student pilots want a career in aviation.

The poor bastards down there flying single pilot metro night cargo need a shortage in the biggest way. Increase the wawcon and the problems will vanish.

What scares me about any minuscule possibility of a "pilot shortages" is that the Canadian government historically has no qualms about allowing TFW's to take our jobs when we won't work for those wages. Uncle Sam is much more protectionist so maybe a low supply of workers will lead to higher wages south of the border, but Up here...not so optimistic.

The problem is how to pass your message along to the elected politicians without paying 300000$ for a lobby. Marc Garneau isn't reading avcanada.
In the US they have ALPA, a superpower that is lobbying for pilots aggressively.
In Canada, lol, we have union leaders who are probably playing ping-pong with the union fees. It is a freaking joke.
Since the last federal election.
Any recent updates about the fatigue rules? No
What is done about the temporary foreign working pilots and Transport Canada licensing? Nothing
The regional pilot wages are ridiculous, any regional airline can hire a 250 wannabee and put them in a CRJ if need be. Who cares about standards and experience. Way to go Canada! We are on the right path.

You'll have to excuse my cynicism here but...
On a cost benefit analysis, an insufficient number of people have died in a mangled fireball in a residential neighbourhood to motivate the government to join the rest of the world in recognizing there is an issue. Much like Ford had a formula that determined how many people had to die in exploding Pinto's before it was worth doing a recall to fix the problem, every air operator, insurer, and politician is making the same calculation using the same formula.
Since that's what it took to make changes south of the 49th, I firmly believe that's what it's going to take to change things here... and sadly, not just one accident but several until the point sinks in that it's not a one off accident.

I'm going to knock this up a notch with my spice weasle. Bam!

It's not cynicism, it's realism. Governments of any stripe change nothing unless they want to or feel they need to - both require political will.Mach1 wrote:You'll have to excuse my cynicism here but...

A shortage of 3000 hour ATPL pilots? Possible with current trends.
A shortage of 200 hour CPL pilots clawing at each other to work a ramp for a chance at flying? Not likely.
(Hint: Most of us here have been one of those)

I think it is really cool that a university is making a study on the pilot market in the US. I wish we could have one that would do a similar work here in Canada. The top three reasons would-be pilots are changing their career plans are the cost of flight training and certification, low pay at regional carriers and a 2013 regulatory change that mandated a sixfold increase in flight hours required to become a first officer, according to a study released last year by the University of North Dakota and the University of Nebraska-Omaha.
