737 Cockpit Virtual Reality App

Post by bhuntsy »

A 737 pilot I follow regularly on YouTube just came out with a virtual reality cockpit app for Google Cardboard. It puts you inside a 737NG simulator as he does emergency procedures with an ATPL student in Europe. If you have a google cardboard headset, I'd definitely recommend checking it out. I've never tried any virtual reality before and I was pretty blown away. Even if you don't have a headset, you can still pan around the cockpit with your finger, but the headset makes it way cooler(they're like $20 on Amazon or Google).

It's called 'Mentour 360' and you can get it on iPhone or Android for about $5.

Here's a link to a sample video on YouTube(you can pan around the cockpit by dragging with your mouse):

It might be less interesting to accomplished pilots, but as an aspiring pilot I found it pretty inspiring.

OK, you made me google Google Cardboard.

Still not sure if it's a joke ...

It looks like a joke but it's pretty impressive. Just make sure you get a good quality headset (with good reviews) if you go for it.

It is very much a real thing. You can get actual cardboard headsets, or some pretty fancy ones from Mattel or even Karl Zeiss. They all work the same though, load your late model smart phone with the appropriate apps, put your phone into your headset and enjoy a reasonable VR experience.
