777 in YWG
Was sitting in my yard today when I heard a distinct sound that you do not hear to often around here. Naturally I took a moment from my Rickards brew and looked up to see an Air China 777 on approach. Odd I thought, turns out it is a rescue plane.

B-2046, an Air China Boeing 777-300 aircraft, was operating as flight CCA818 from
Washington/Dulles Intl, VA (KIAD) to Beijing/Capital Intl, China (ZBAA) with 17 crew members and
277 passengers onboard. While in cruise at 30 000 feet, the number 2 engine (GE 90-115B) fail
light illuminated. The engine was shut down and the aircraft diverted to Winnipeg/James A.
Richardson Intl, MB (CYWG). No emergency was declared but ARFF was put on standby. The
flight dumped fuel and the aircraft landed without further incident.
It was reported that the right engine transfer gear box had failed.

Re: 777 in YWG
A rescue Air China B777 flew into YWG from PEK on Monday June 6. On board were 16 Air China techs. Next an Air China B777 freighter from PEK arrived with a replacement engine mounted in a large cradle. Also on the freighter was a spare empty cradle to hold the sick engine plus lots of equipment and tools.
The engine was changed and run ups were completed by Thurdsay afternoon. A large crane was brought into the hangar to lift the sick engine and cradle onto a flatbed. This engine was then taken to Toronto and was to be air freighted to a GE facility in France. The 777 was ferried to PEK on Friday morning.

fish4life brought up an interesting subject. What if it was January and the temperatures were in the minus a jillion with a howling wind. Is there a hangar in Winnipeg big enough to fit a 777 or do they simply send in some real tough mechanics to fix it outside.
The average pilot, despite the somewhat swaggering exterior, is very much capable of such feelings as love, affection, intimacy and caring.
These feelings just don't involve anyone else.

Re: 777 in YWG
The Old Air Canada hanger on the west side of the airport is pretty big but not sure if it can fit a 777.
Re: 777 in YWG
Don't they have engine mx shelter tents? Would think if they are equipped to send an entire aircraft over with crew and equipment they would probably have those for the less balmy months. 24 hours would be a long time to be working outside in the peg.

Yes they do. Many moons ago a United Airlines 777 diverted to Yellowknife. Engine Issue. Maint swapped it right on the ramp in the middle of winter, January I believe. Large tent and a bunch of herman nelsons. Maint crew were probably in t-shirts under there.

The 777 engine change was completed inside one of the Air Canada hangars. Lots of room. The pic I took was after it was pushed outside prior to engine runs.fish4life wrote:The Old Air Canada hanger on the west side of the airport is pretty big but not sure if it can fit a 777.

YWG maintenance guys are half Yeti and can survive minus a jillion wearing flip flops, jean cut off shorts and Beaters.oldtimer wrote:fish4life brought up an interesting subject.
