I'm perplexed about what it means when "ICG" appears in the remarks section of a METAR. A recent Metar at CYPQ shows ceiling 1000' and vis 3SM , temp M3/M3, with ICG in the remarks. Is this saying there is icing in the clouds above the airport? How would it know this? Would this be "known" or "forecast" icing? Did ice form on a sensor in the weather box? Ice on the runway would be in the notam section -which was absent in this particular example. Anyone know?
Obviously not flying,, just...perplexed.

From the Aviation Weather Services Guide. AWOS has a full suite of sensors that measures cloud base height, sky cover,
visibility, temperature, dew point, wind velocity, altimeter setting, precipitation
occurrence, type, amount and intensity, and icing. LWIS is a more basic
automated weather system, measuring only wind, altimeter setting,
temperature and dew point. Either system may be equipped with a voice
generation module.
Some sort of sensor I guess. Icing on the runway would be on the RSC notam. The airport manager or designate would manually put any icing information in the RSC report

Us old folks will recall the remark "FROIN" for "frost on indicator". Of course, that was pre-AWOS days. The "indicator" was a piece of aluminum angle near the Stevenson Screen.

FROIN is still used, places like CYHE will have it listed from time to time.

FROIN is still used by human observers when frost is observed on the indicator.
ICG being reported by AUTO stations means there is icing detected on the icing sensor. Nothing to do with icing on the runway or in clouds. Most likely when freezing precipitations occur. I'm not sure if it codes ICG when frost or rime is accumulating though.

As mentioned. ICG on AWOS is same as Metar for FROIN for those of us that still report it. AWOS for auto stations are slightly different to staffed obs.
