I received some sage advice about impaired crew members long ago: Do everything you can to keep them away from the aircraft.

With the string of recent incidents like this, I have to wonder why this happens. Why would anyone take the chance? Aside from the legalities of it, you know if you are caught, the likelihood of which is pretty high, it's probably a career ending event. If for some reason you exercised very poor judgement and got too drunk the night before and went into your 12 hours, isn't it better just to book off sick and take the heat for that? The consequences would likely be much less severe.

Typically there is an addiction at the heart of the issue. At more established carriers there are solid programs in place - the biggest hurdle for most - is trust. The addicted person has to have the trust to come forward (which I can personally vouch for at wj) then we can move forward with proper treatment along side or in conjunction with our colleagues at TC. The key is to address the issue before you have an "accountable" issue or event occur, much like this unfortunate one.

After successfully being treated and adhering to specific protocols - employment generally (in most cases)stays or remains intact. I'm not an expert here, but that has been my experience in this area.

Happy new year and safe flying.

In other news a JetBlue pilot deplaned everybody, called security on himself, because some twat accused him of being in the bar. When they reloaded they were denied boarding, and then they bitch about that too. Damned iPad won't let me go back"because the pilot was late to the plane, he then had a sobriety test done to be totally above board before embarking anybody.

My bad story was 2014

I can't find the english version of the article, but according to this, the pilot was from Slovakia, with a temporary work permit:

I hear AC might need a new Halifax CSR.

This guy sounds perfect.

Media update indicates a 37 yr old foreign national from Slovakia here on a work visa. Needless to say an embarrassing situation for Sunwing in all aspects

Shameful. Putting lives at risk like that. Deport the individual!

...Seems they are going to remove the axe and the control column from the cockpits for security reasons.

I thought the TFW thing was finished and SW only hired Canadian pilots now. I guess not.
BTW the online advertisers at the NP site either have a wicked sense of humour or it's a karmic fluke. The ad just above the story was for Ketel vodka.

He was Captain too. A 37 year old drunk Slovakian can be a jet captain in Canada and I can't get an interview for a regional turboprop job because of all the competition.

It was a "wetlease" under authority granted by the CTA. So SW did not hire the crew.

Flight Tracker is showing this flight as being operated by Thomsonfly.com , who were granted authority to operate some flights for SunWing under: https://www.otc-cta.gc.ca/eng/ruling/333-a-2016

It might be "approved" but it's BS.

Business model is wrong if you're perpetually allowed to import foreign pilots/aircraft. This is what you get...

We might as well start bringing in some Antonovs with vodka burners under the wings and up front... At least they could take more than a 737...

I wonder how many people he interacted with that morning on his way to the flight deck before finally passing out and removing all doubt as to his fitness to be flying? Had he not passed out, at what point would someone have taken action?

In the incident a couple days ago in Indonesia, it’s reported that it came all the way down to the passengers refusing to stay onboard the aircraft that finally prompted action to be taken to prevent him attempting to fly the aircraft.
