Headsets

I'm looking into investing in my first headset. I have a job this summer with a float company and plan on staying there for a few years before heading to something like bearskin or perimeter then onto bigger airlines. I'm just wondering what companies, if any, supply headsets. Or how long I might actually need my own headset. I just don't want to spend $1000 on a headset if I will only be using it for a year or two while on floats.

1.)Every small place that I've worked expected you to have your own headset - I'm sure that Bearskin and Perimeter are no different.
2.) What's your hearing worth to you?
3.) Aren't they tax-deductible?

So you think the noise cancelling and quality of Lightspeed or Bose is worth the price over something like David Clark H10's?

For a floatplane I would get a Bose A20 or Telex Stratus 50D. Well worth every penny.

Congratulations on the first job.

Without a doubt I would get a Telex Stratus 50D again in a heartbeat. I flew metros and it was by far the quietest thing going. Second worth every penny.

Invest in the headset. I am at Jazz, and while we are provided a company headset, I still use my old Bose. I can't stand the headset they give us.

Use the search function here. There was another thread not long ago about headset advice.

My biggest piece of advice is to try each one on before you buy it. Every one of them fits differently. What is comfortable for some, isn't for others.

The Bose struggled to keep up with the Otter. I'd suggest starting with a DC and then once you've made some money I highly recommend the Bose A20

Only if you are using LEMO powered. Otherwise, batteries are the key to ANR.

Try a bunch on your head if you can get to a place that stocks them. I wasn't happy with the Lightspeed I own, so I tried on the Bose A20 at Oshkosh last year....It was like heaven compared to mine. I was able to do a direct comparison as I'd just picked mine up from repair at the other booth.

I've got a couple sets of the Tangos in my helicopter. I like them but I don't fly for a living, so I'm not wearing them all day. Same problem like all noise cancelling head sets when wearing glasses, you need to get them seated. I'm quite happy with them, and the fact that there are no cords hanging around the cockpit.

You can't ever go wrong with David Clark. I've had a pair of the X11s for around 10 years and love them still. Buy once, cry once.

Bose A20 hands down, best headset and wish I would have bought one when I started flying turbo props, I used it on the A320 and now on the EMJ. I was able to write mine off as well. Money well spent!
