Thessalon Muni CPL5

Post by cpknight »

Does anyone know what's going on with Thessalon Muni?

I'm planning to fly out to that neck of the woods this Summer and my friends' cabin is only a few minutes drive from CPL5. I was trying to get permission to land/tie down but I don't have any current contact information. When I enquired about landing, the rep from Thessalon (municipality) that I was able to get a hold of simply said that the airport has been sold and he has no info for me. I've asked about who the airport was sold to, but no response.

An article from last year CFS suggested that the municipality was trying to unload the airport ( http://www.saultstar.com/2016/05/02/onl ... el-storage ) so it seems like that may have happened, but the CFS still lists Thessalon as the operator so I'm stuck for the time being. If not CPL5, it looks like I'll have to consider Sault Ste Marie or Elliot Lake, which are both a bit out of the way for me. Maybe this is the excuse I need for a float rating...

Anyone with contact information for the new owners/operators would be greatly appreciated.

- Chris

Bar River may also be an option if you contact the operator.

If you do go to Thessalon, brush up on your obstacle approaches before going. The place is really no big deal to get into or out of but I don't know your overall experience level with this sort of thing and unfamiliar approaches have a way of getting inside people's heads.

Thanks - Bar River/Springer is a decent alternative if Thessalon is closed to me. Hopefully it won't be, in which case I'll definitely take your advice and practice some obstacle approaches and departures beforehand...

....and another one bites the dust.

Sad. Not many airports up that way.

Jeez...too bad. We used to have our maintenance for our Mu-2s at Bonair out of there. Late 80's. T-28 parked next door.

Nope. That is not Thessalon. This is: https://www.google.ca/maps/@46.3160169, ... l=en&hl=en

Due north of the town off 129. Paved and note the hangers. Hope the link works.
