Not much of a ripple on this here euh? I guess safety oversight is not a popular subject, even though it is necessary and important. Does anyone really know how TC has done MEASURABLY in terms of surveillance, oversight and enforcement in recent years? Is it a good thing to know that the odds of being randomly ramp-checked are essentially nil to none?

I got the impression most people here already thought TC's SMS was a joke when it first came out, and still is... but the likely hood of reform is next to nothing. Until more accidents happen that is. TC only wants to save money...

Ramp checks were useless because they legally could do nothing more than demand you produce a few documents.

So legally all a pilot had to do was show them the required documents and not even let them hold them in their hands.

Once that was done they could not go further without just cause for further action.

So no ramp checks are no great loss to safety.

The cuts have been going on for over a decade, probably two. The public service people (way above TC level) have this risk management notion complete with a matrix to determine ''risk'' levels and then proceed with their cuts. One of the results was the SMS system. As indicated, employees now look at reports behind a desk and seldom see the real world, aggravating the disconnect between the two worlds.

They figure that, well, if incidents are not on the rise, what's the problem?

Did it, got out. Disconnected organisation.
