You're right, and this also applies to more than few AME's doing graveyards in the arctic,etc... except for... well, the pay...I don't think welders do what they do because they love being out on a pipeline for 10-12 hrs doing very high concentration work all day because they love it, sure some might, but it's all about the money for them usually, and rightly so
As for the rest of your post(s), I generally agree with your philosophic outlook, except for the point, which you also mention, that the pay compares poorly.
That, along with BS that is well known in aviation, are the main reasons so many(who actually work as AME's) don't speak highly of this trade.
I think I can speak for all when I say that all of us came into this biz liking/loving airplanes and aviation, and that many of us have had that feeling tempered/eliminated after being in it for several years. I know I only think of it as work and something at which I need to maximize my return for the time I have to spend at it. Can't 100% say I hate the work, but Im to the point where Im not disappointed when I have a multi-day stretch of snagless airplanes.
