Re: "Any conflicting traffic..." Is A Stupid Thing To Say
Oh come on people, how is it poor airmanship or mediocre? It's a phrase that's all. It doesn't make you a poor pilot and it doesn't - if you really think about it - eat up any significant airtime or increase risk to anything. It's annoying to you and that's it.
Conciseness is a self-correcting problem meaning if it really made a difference people would stop saying it on their own. Listen to ORD or LGA ground on liveATC to see if anyone has a problem being concise. They don't, and it's because they are forced to be quick and efficient. Even from high altitude 126.7 isn't so busy that saying five extra words is an unnecessary burden on the airwaves.
It's annoying to you and I get that, but that's all it is. Stop taking yourselves so seriously, and for crying out loud stop thinking you have better airmanship because you think you have better radio skills than the next guy. Find something you really suck at that matters and concentrate on that...

I think it's clear by now that it's more fun concentrating on something that you suck at that we feel matters.Rockie wrote:Find something you really suck at that matters and concentrate on that...
Re: "Any conflicting traffic..." Is A Stupid Thing To Say
Oh it's very much mediocre and green sounding. Imagine going on inside the actors studio. "thanks James, like, I had a wicked awesome time doing the movie. Like you know when the thing, like, ate the monster? Like best day ever. Hahahuhhuhahauha.
Pretty sure everyone would make fun...
" traffic on 26.7 gabc is currently 45 nautical miles north of timmins, presently level at 4, 500, enroute for Moosonee. Any conflicting traffic please advise, gabc 26.7." 10 seconds and sounds like a newb
Gabc is 45 north of timmins, 4,500 northbound moosonee. 3 seconds and sounds like a rockstar

I guess I should write something here.

Oh I get it now - it's important to sound like a rockstar.
Why didn't you say so in the first place?

"Any conflicting traffic, please advise.... yada yada yada"
If the phrase if so necessary, why don't you use it when starting the take-off roll, when leaving the circuit, when joining the circuit, when downwind, when on base, when on final; etc.?
EXACTLY! And the same reasoning holds true for position reporting anywhere else on the planet.

Excellent, now let's tackle the rampant improper use of the phonetic alphabet:Maynard wrote:Finally.... Why else would this thread be on page 6....Rockie wrote:Oh I get it now - it's important to sound like a rockstar.
"Oscar" vs "OSS cah"
"PAH pah" vs "pah PAH"
"Three" vs "TREE"
"Four" vs "FOW er"
"Five" vs "FIFE"
"Nine" vs "NIN er"
This is really all bordering on unprofessional don't you think? In fact deserving of its own thread IMHO.
Re: "Any conflicting traffic..." Is A Stupid Thing To Say
Holy crap. I mean, really? 6 pages? What utter nonsense. Must be a really slow, booooring summer. I seriously hope I have the last word. Word.
"What's it doing now?"
"Fly low and slow and throttle back in the turns."

I'm surprised to hear people still use this phonectic alphabet you are talking about. Seems to be very rare in my area around here. Unfortunately this is not a joke.Rockie wrote:Excellent, now let's tackle the rampant improper use of the phonetic alphabet:Maynard wrote:Finally.... As an AvCanada discussion grows longer:
-the probability of 'entitlement' being mentioned, approaches 1

Above all this is most important. That's why when I call clear of the active I finish it with "GOODNIGHT SPRINGWATER! YOU'VE BEEN GREAT!!!! YYYYYYEAAAAAAHHHHHHH"Rockie wrote:Oh I get it now - it's important to sound like a rockstar.
Then I power kick out of the airplane.

I know...shameful isn't it? But it is still the official pronunciation and this flagrant disregard for proper RT isn't just a northern Ontario/ inexperience problem, it is literally worldwide and spans all experience levels. Almost NOBODY does it correctly which I thought would surely drive the mediocrity-slayers f*****g nuts. But there you go, I guess mediocrity is in the ear of the beholder...digits_ wrote:I'm surprised to hear people still use this phonectic alphabet you are talking about. I'm guilty of that too btw but I don't care because I wallow in mediocrity.
Re: "Any conflicting traffic..." Is A Stupid Thing To Say
These rants aren't about proper phraseology, quite frankly I think tree and fife are idiotic. Nothing sounds like three, and niner is already there to separate from 5. This is more about wasting time saying useless things.
I guess I should write something here.
Re: "Any conflicting traffic..." Is A Stupid Thing To Say
And another thing while we're on this crusade - do you have any idea how many "Good morning's", "hello's", and "have a good day's" I've already heard just this morning? Why, I'm ashamed to admit I'm even guilty of it myself. Nowhere - NOWHERE - is that proper, official radio terminology and it eats up a HUGE amount of airtime on very busy ATC frequencies.
Where is Transport Canada and the FAA? Who is responsible for maintaining standards around here?

Re: "Any conflicting traffic..." Is A Stupid Thing To Say
Phraseology is developed to be used internationally, or even just nationally for international pilots. While all the native English speaking pilots might consider this idiotic, it helps out all the other pilots.Maynard wrote:These rants aren't about proper phraseology, quite frankly I think tree and fife are idiotic. If you throw in different accents, it is quite difficult to pronounce "three" properly on the radio. Hence "tree".

That's easy for you to say. If one more person clutters up the airwaves by telling me to "have a nice day" I'm going to file a CADOR's or something equally rash.B208 wrote:Easy there big wheel, this is nothing over which to get worked up.Rockie wrote:And another thing while we're on this crusade - do you have any idea how many "Good morning's", "hello's", and "have a good day's" I've already heard just this morning? I'm going to start using non-nato phonetics.
"Springwater Traffic this is Cherokee Funnel Ubiquitous Bolivia Celery."
My goal is to see how many aneurisms it causes.
