Siddley Hawker

The photos you attached from the 1950's are excellent.
Beaver CF-GQA could not have been very old in that photo.

The guys waiting to get in the Norseman is a classic.

They are really nice photos. Thanks.

Siddley thanks for the pic of Larry Roluf. I was his copilot on an Avalon Aviation Canso in 1984 firefighting in Saskatchewan and Ontario. He was an awesome guy and had so many cool stories that you could never remember them all. It's too bad he never wrote a book.

Thank you fellas.

Beech that Beaver must have been pretty new, Hollinger - Lab Mining bought three right about the same time, GQA, IUU and IUS. The last Beaver I ever flew was IUU, Labrador Mining had me on their insurance and I flew it off the dolly over to the lake you see there, on floats. That was 1974 or 75. Neil Aird has all three on his site. My father is probably in that gang waiting for the Noorduyn. He worked for Geodetic for about fifteen years after WW2. If that is indeed HAF taxiing in, it met it's end right in the pass you see there behind it. The pilot had a heart attack right on takeoff and crashed in the bush on the left side of the pass. He was ferrying freight out to a Geodetic crew in the bush and one of the dockhands wanted to go along for the ride, but another guy pushed the airplane away from the dock before he had a chance to board. They watched the airplane crash.

CL that is a good shot of Larry. I didn't know him very well, but he was a friend of my fathers. I met him a few times when he was at Avalon. That company was owned by Moose Murdock and my ex-boss at Iron Ore, Bob McLean. I knew Larry's brother Fred very well, Fred was at Hollinger Ungava Transport for years before setting up the flight department at Northern Telecom. Those pics came from a cousin of mine whose husband wrenched at Northern Wings for many years. Her husband Bill Gallichon can be seen climbing into the Canso there behind Larry. As you say, it's a pity the pilots of that generation didn't write a book of their adventures. I tried to talk guys like Lloyd Hogan, Mike Beaudoin and Phil Lariviere into writing stuff down and the reactions ranged from "Are you out of your !@#$ mind" to "Who would want to read that shit?" :D

Wonderful shots esp, thanks!

Flying a Beech 17 is in my bucket list.

I saw that one around Whitehorse some years ago. Who's the lucky owner?

Great pics esp. Is that CPY in the first one?

It sure is CPY, took it before I started my commercial. Back in 05 I think... I regret not getting any when it was covered in the quilt earlier in the year.

Gilles, thanks for your kind words, just happened to be in the right place at the right time for most of my photography. As for the Beech 17 it belongs to a local judge here, it's one of the sexiest airplanes I have ever seen up close.

I'm all laid up right now.. but snagged this one in MCO in september. You can see the vapour coming off the nukes just left of center.

Haven't posted anything here in a while. Here's one from a year ago, at the very end of float season.

I honestly miss this type of flying, even in cold and windy conditions like this!

Its just a parade and special events vehicle. I don't think it was ever used as a duty car.

Siddley Hawker, your old pictures are amazing! Everything changed so much. My favorite is the second one with the overview of the lake area. Beautiful!

esp803, I love the second picture in your post dated Sep 27, 2012 5:10 pm, the sunset is amazing and the float airplane looks nice, with its shadow on the water!

jspitfire, nice one of the end of float season! Looking forward to snow/ice like that! Come on Winter!

Here's a pic I took today, flew to La Tabatière again (ZLT) and snapped it in the Twin as a passenger.
