Some experienced folks have begun to emulate them,
This is something I'll never understand, but it happens all the time. You'll hear guys who should know better say ridiculous things on the radio, and it seems to be contagious. I think there's something in the human brain that responds to the sound of another's voice and wants to emulate it. I remember the one day where one of the students was out flying and, as new students occasionally do, he forgot that "O" was "Oscar" in phoenetics. As people do in vain attempts to sound like they know what they're doing, but just pull it out of their ass, he decided that the best word for "O" was "October". It must have been infectious and sounded really good since every othe pilot within transmission distance on 122.8 that day decided that October sounded good and changed over. Like they hadn't got the memo or something.
Strange stuff.
It seems every other day there's a word of the day and suddenly everyone is saying it. This week I think its "currently". A few weeks ago it was "approximately".
My personal favorite though is when the pilots try to work in so many of the word of the day into a radio call that they realise mid way through how redundant they sound, but plow on finishing it anyhow. My absolute favorite one was when we were passing over some lonely airstrip, and the fellow who had just started up on the ground must have felt that we needed to know he was there. Maybe it was too many days away from civilization for him or something. Right away he was broadcasting "**** traffic this is **** on the ramp, taxiing across the ramp for, uh... the ramp."
