Problem is, how do you know that without removing all the snow? If the plane has been parked out in the sun for a while, you can get a layer of frost forming underneath the snow which might only be on part of the wing.HS-748 2A wrote:

unless you are European probably none as type I (orange) is for de-icing and type IV (green) for anti Icing type two is really only used in Europe its yellow.HS-748 2A wrote:adhering
It is all such a bunch of BS and ass-covering. "adhering" is the word.
I wonder how many hundreds of gallons of Type II I've seen used at $5.00/litre to hose loose snow off a -20 airplane.

Adhering is the word. That should be beaten into everybody's head at the annual deice training we all have to endure.
No wonder there's no profit in this business. Nobody can use their heads anymore.

What's bugging you about the attitude of that new rampie? Because she's positive and hoping for the best? You think her smile further the problem? You feel insecure around women? Because someone is nice to people doesn't mean he trying to get ahead. Maybe he/she just have a better attitude in life than yours.SYT_YYZ wrote: The attitude of the new female rampie is bugging me. Chicks in this industry can sometimes have a bad rap for getting ahead on nothing but tits and ovaries... and its a shit eating grin like hers that furthers the problem. Not ALL female pilots are like that and frankly I would hate to get ahead based on my sex and not based on my ability to pull my weight like everyone else. I wonder how long the other ramp guy has been working there without a chance at even sitting in the airplane and newby chick is getting a chance to sit left seat? ... Stupidity... I hate that she says something along the lines of "if they offered me a chance to fly tomorrow I would say yes" (insert "even if it means I get to step over everyone else who ACTUALLY earned it because I have boobs..")
In my mind YOU are part of the problem. The anti-women sentiment in this industry. If you really think that a woman jumps in front of you, maybe you shoud look at YOURSELF before you put any blame on her because she is a woman. I personally find that Jeremy guy has quite a stupid, retarded attitude towards woman. You say that women should be treated the same as any other pilot, and that is quite true. However you are the first one to THINK they are different and get preferential treatement and TREAT them differently.
If anything, women should be given an extra chance in this industry, for what they had to go through in the past, and sadly in some cases, for what they have to go through today.

So impose an inequality on another? Let's just all be equal and be treated as such. Do you think that she wants everyone to believe she got a helping hand just because a quota needed to be reached? Not even the most hardcore feminists I have met tow that line, and if you proposed that to them you would probably receive a kick to the junk.If anything, women should be given an extra chance in this industry, for what they had to go through in the past, and sadly in some cases, for what they have to go through today.

They make many types of lifts to access tops of wings and tails. Seems operators like Buffalo Airways are just cheap and could give a rats ass about safety.Rubberbiscuit wrote:It is easier said than done finding something that will get you up high enough to sweep the top of the wings. Can't say I remember for sure but believe the top of the wing on the '46 is 16' above ground at the highest point. We used to stand on a pallet lifted up by a fork lift sometimes if the ground was even enough or not to icy. Not any safer really but it worked! I fell and slid off the trailing edge a few times, but it was sheer luck that prevented me from not falling off the leading edge or engine nacelle while sweeping, fuelling or putting on engine tents.

How can you tell which one is the pilot when you walk into a bar?....Don't worry he will come up and tell you.
Re: Ice Pilots of NWT Series on History Channel this Fall!
Actually getting a lift to reach to wingtip of a DC-4 is really no problem, the company only has to require it. We had 2 engineers up on one against a 415 wing in Alberta a couple of years ago when a Buffalo DC-4 lost his brakes while taxiing and ran his wing overtop of the 415 wing requiring both engineers to jump for their lives. So you can see with Buffalo being in a cherry picker is still no guarantee of doing the job without getting hurt.

I think the comments were a little much considering that that show is frankein-edited so what you see isn't necessary what you get, but until you've lost a job (when you had more experience, better license, more qualifications) to someone and you can see no reason (assuming both were equal on interview) other than sex....AuxBatOn wrote:What's bugging you about the attitude of that new rampie? I actually know somebody who said she never wanted to get any job because she was a woman, but she knew that it did happen, and didn't try and deny it. It sucks, but it does happen.

For the whole wing walking, you dont really need a stand, you can use vacuum anchors, set a primary and secondary up attach the rope between the 2 of them and your set to walk along the wing. http://www.grainger.com/Grainger/items/2UZZ1 Its kinda pricey but I think you can rent them as well.

Couldn't have said it better myself. As for the "maybe he didn't get WCB due to not following safe practices" comment.SeptRepair wrote:They make many types of lifts to access tops of wings and tails. What safe practices?! I'm not even going to rant about that one because that would take up too much time typing it.
You can't make a comment like that without actually seeing what the rampies go through there. And the TV show doesn't show SH*T!
Thanks for the kind words CLguy, I am working again and with a company that actually RESPECTS their employees.

That stuff all looks great in a nice warm hangar but I don't get setting that kind of stuff up outside when it's 40 below and how long till those pads and associated pneumatic components freeze up or how will their performance degrade in the cold. . Besides you have to be on top of the plane or wing with no fall arrest to begin with to set it up. In that time you could have the wing cleared off and be on your way with no real difference in the level of safety. In fact you are exposing yourself to the elements longer than may be necessary increasing risk of frost bite.bigbert wrote:For the whole wing walking, you dont really need a stand, you can use vacuum anchors, set a primary and secondary up attach the rope between the 2 of them and your set to walk along the wing. http://www.grainger.com/Grainger/items/2UZZ1 Its kinda pricey but I think you can rent them as well.

Also is there any info about what kind of effect applying repetitive vacuum to the aircraft skin would be?
A powered hydraulic lift could work if the ramp isn't too icy. I'm not sure how they handle on the ice.
Reminds me of when I was on a rig one winter and the company safety rep insisted everyone wear eye protection at all times. It didn't matter at all that everyone's eye wear was fogging up and no one could see where they were walking creating a whole other set of hazards.

So, do we have to wait for the next episode to find out more about the rampie soap-opera? Are they all still there? Are they flying yet? Inquiring minds want to know...
Say, what's that mountain goat doing up here in the mist?

I have to say, Audrey worked for me when I was still at BA...... she outworked almost all the males there, and did so with a smile and good attitude. From what I hear, she has moved on from there, but I know she will be a good addition to wherever she is.

I wonder what certified seats all these people traveling around on these freighters are sitting in. On this last show there were at minimum 5 people in total in the C-46 if you count 2 crew 1 Engineer 1 freight manager and 1 camera man. There was probably a sound guy with the camera man. The DC 4 in Stoney rapids probably had just as many people in it hauling gas.

Mine/exploration site where Buffalo had one of their crashes.
Allegedly, there were some extra crew members on board without proper seats.
