I guess you've never seen rock damage in a Twin Otter from running it on the ground. It's possible, it happens and I've seen it. Not so dumb after all.
Don't know CID, I've got 3000 hours on Twin Otters. Never picked up a stone starting up or taxiing. Share with us, where you've seen this? Only an idiot would do a full power run up on gravel...in any airplane.

Must admit I have received a rock chip in the prop while flying twin otters. You had to be especially careful on intermediate gear and a cold frosty fall morning. The rocks would stick to the tires, and almost always want to come off and be thrown forward through the prop. Slow taxi speeds solved this problem.
Don't have to worry about that now, as it is all pavement now.

What about wanting to keep blowing snow out of the cowl and exhaust pipes? That stuff packs itself in anywhere. Hard to pick out. Some exhaust pipes like the Twin Otter's are hard to get covers for, and even if you could the tent is probably less irritating to put on.

Of course I'm not talking about a real engine tent, just the quilted covers that everyone calls "tents" these days. An actual engine tent with no heat source...THAT would be dumb.

Lots of reasons to put the tents on. Maybe its going to sit for a while, don't need to leave it on the heat for days. They're also a good way to keep stuff out of all the openings, again especially if its going to be on the ground for a bit.

I've put TBD in job ads, if only because there are too many variables with qualifications, hours worked, responsibilities; to name a few, especially with flight training jobs. You also get a lot of people applying these days with their own personal conditions on their employment. Which these days seems really hard to take into account. You don't have to agree to what I offer, but that's usually a condition of what you offer me.

You guys have never heard of engine plugs? Last time I checked they kept birds, sand, snow, and even held the prop still in 40kt wind. But might as well tent it instead.

The comment was a generalization, it could apply to any industry out there. But yes I have seen a gentleman who was a paraplegic fly a Commanche. He had hand controls installed in the aircraft for the rudder. Swung himself out of the cockpit, opened the baggage door, pulled out his wheelchair and rolled away. Never needed, wanted, or asked for help. EXCEPTIONAL if you ask me.

Slow taxi speeds solved this problem

They would solve a lot more problems than just rocks -- damn -- I get sick of being beat up in the back of an aeroplane because some guy taxis like he is in a formula one race -- it seems the smaller the aircraft the faster the taxi -- whatever happened to smooth and pax comfort -- wtf

Who knows what the locals will put inside the cowl during a hold in YPM! Not everyone likes to sit in their airplane and do play by plays to their FO of every airplane that comes into YPM like you do ILLya! Go have a seat in the cop shop, its a much more entertaining day! hahahahaha

Haha love how snarky this thread got so quick, come now children... :smt014

Dumbest thing I think would be the guy who pulled reverse in a metro with loads of snow on the ground, to avoid heating up and freezing the breaks. Only issue, he sucked a whole heap of snow and and had a twin engine flame out, he did stop before the hold short line though!

For short turns, sure tent the engines and don't plug them in. Keeps them a good few degrees warmer over a few hours. Overnight, not much use to that if they aint plugged in!!

Dumbest thing -- posted before -- guy about a month ago, ignored calls from other traffic and Unicom , decides to attempt a head to head with me on downwind (before I bailed out in a hurry), no landing light, (that I saw) then decides to land on the non active runway -- with a tailwind -- in the dark. Then, (sorry I missed this part), stalled AC on taxiway, overprimed, and lighted off his carburetor.

Yes, he stopped rolling pretty close to the end of the runway with that tailwind, too.

Dumbest thing I think would be the idiot who thought it would be a good idea to try locking the cabin door when he didn't have a key for it. Who knew that you can't unlock a door with whatever random keys you have on your keychain?

Yeah well, you can put plugs in the intakes, to keep large passerine birds out maybe, but you still have the space in the cowl around the exhaust pipes, the inertial deflector outlet, the pipes themselves if they are a funny shape like the Twin Otter (never seen plugs for those) the spinner, etc.

That really fine blowing snow in a good Arctic blow really gets in there, and then turns to rock. Maybe they make plugs for all these things, but I'd rather just bag it. You can start a PT-6 with no preheat at -40, but not if it's jammed full of snow.

I still don't think it's dumb.

Dumb thing for the day: Someone comes to me this morning desperately needing their night rating signed off. "Sure", says I, "do you have your license with you?"

"No, why would you need that?"

"Um, what did you think I was going to sign?"

Both pilots of that Navajo in Berens River who forgot to pull their wheel chocks out. Instead of getting out to see why all that power was not doing the job proceeded to apply almost T/O power to jump the chocks and proceed on their merry way.

[quote=] Only an idiot would do a full power run up on gravel...in any airplane.

I did replace a flight crew stuck at a remote airport once that had an engine starting issue on a high wing turboprop. It turned out that the maintenance guys in the preceding days had done a high power run for some checks and therefore had to replace a composite prop blade(which had to be flown in of course) after picking up a stone. The unfortunate thing is that they had one of those hard surface pads in front of the terminal. The end cause of the whole issue....a relay.

High wing aircraft can pick up stones. Something to think about on a short gravel runway when tempted to add full power prior to brake release.

How about going around after a hard landing, engine and wingtip ground contact, and possible gear damage?

More tailwind adventures. Watched Wind shift to a good 10+ knot tailwind today. Effect on traffic pattern at our little uncontrolled field......nothing for a good little while. Planes continued to land, touch and goes ( with noticeably more screeching and runway usage) -- and several planes taxied for takeoff right beside a windsock sticking out the wrong direction.

Lemmings.

Anyone actually Look at that orange thing to see what's happening....or is it a permanent follow the leader game?
