+1 for Randy. I recently finished my float rating with him in his 172, and I would definitely recommend him. He is highly experienced, and will give you some of the best training that it's possible to get. It's pretty reasonably priced, at $1699 (+tax) for the seaplane rating on the 172, or $2800 on the 180. Ground school and briefings are included in the price.

Randy recommends training initially on the 172, then moving onto the 180 later.
.

I second that.

I got my float rating at VFC in their 172, and then went on to fly with Dave at OceanAir in his 180. Dave will take you to some awesome spots, with small docks, tight harbours, that sorta thing... He'll teach you how to work a floatplane, not just fly one.

I had a blast with both of those places.

Randy does the same. I did the groundschool at VFC, but decided to go with Randy instead for the actual training.

In my opinion you can not go wrong learning from either Randy or Dave.

The only difference between them as far as I know is Randy has been flying floats longer than Dave, but that really is not an issue as far as teaching goes.

So go meet them both and see who you feel most comfortable with.

Retired and living very well thanks to the money I made in aviation :D :D :D

The hardest thing about flying is knowing when to say no

After over a half a century of flying no one ever died because of my decision not to fly.

Just wanted to chime in here. Literally finished up my basic float rating with Randy Hanna a few hours ago. HIGHLY recommended. I have flown with a few instructors over the years and man does he know his floats! Plus being able to practice in the gulf islands that are right there means your spending almost all the time on the rating and not enroute to a practice area. For me it was worth the commutes from Victoria. If I had the budget for his mentoring program I believe it would be good money spent! If I won the lottery I would totally do my multi rating on his Beech.

Not to say VFC would not be a great choice, there are great people and aircraft there!
