Does anyone know if there are any schools that take into consideration a student with a PPL already? My son has his ppl through cadets and is looking around for a program. He has applied and accepted to Mt. Allison but they don’t credit a ppl And Mt.A is super expensive.

Some suggestions would be appreciated
Hi there. Thanks for your nice words!

I actually had a PPL going into this program. And I must say it helped immensely. To put it into perspective, pretty much all university, college, and career college flight schools are going to be following the rules of an "Integrated" program, designed and approved by TC. You can count up to 30 hours of your PPL training towards your total in the program, and having a PPL will allow you to start at a different phase in the program ahead of everyone else (after some currency flights of course). I got my PPL shortly after graduating high school, and this has allowed me to get way ahead of all the training milestones by months. Sounds like he is ahead of the game. I wish him well.

Hi
As stated there are many options to consider. You were smart to stay away from the Sault College Aviation program! You only need to do a search on "Sault" on this site to understand why. As long as the school continues to over populate the program, (goverment funding) they will put the students success as risk. Inconsistent flight training frequency has been an issue with the school for many years. Example, the class of 2020, started in 2017, went into their 3rd and last year with most still working on their Private. Students were posting how they were flying 1-2 times a month for months at times. All these issue for the record were pre covid! You should know as well if you fail the schools flight test, they can reset you. What this means is you will have to start your flight training all over again. If you fail an academic class, you will be asked to come back they following year when it is offered again. In short, you are out for a year.

If you search on here you will find a link to Saults local paper, as well CBC, that did a piece on the issues of the program. It seems a parent(s) is considering suing the school.

Below is a quote from the article.

“The flying was so out of sync with the academics in school. The flying was 18 months behind for some kids. The flying was so inconsistent, kids are waiting up to three months between flights for the class of 2020,” said Caron, who said her daughter withdrew from the program and got her private licence in Quebec, despite a heavy student debt load.

"......parents and students who have reached out to SooToday since the announcement said some students in the three-year program were as much as a year or more behind on their flight training even before COVID-19 hit."

Imagine starting year 3 and still working on your PPL, and your academic classes are for your Multi, and Multi IFR. This is exactly what was happening as the classes and flight training were so out of sync!

Best of luck.

He’s already almost got a ppl, you only get kicked out if you can’t figure out how to do a lap in the circuit within 17 hours. Clearly that won’t be an issue.

Have you looked into the Fanshawe College program in London? Run by Diamond Flight Centre, the same as Western, so same planes/instructors. I believe it's a 2 year program where you start flying right away. This is the first year of the program and there have been some delays due to COVID so I don't know if there is a backlog of students for next year but it's worth a look.

University of Windsor Aeronautics program will give credit for those entering the program with a PPL! I believe it’s also possible to finish the four year degree in 3 years if you come in with a PPL.

One school that's missing from a lot of these types of conversations is Genesis in Collingwood. My son is almost done their 1 year (call it 1-1/2 thanks to Covid lockdowns) CPL Diploma program. He'll end up with CPL Multi IFR and an Ontario College Diploma, all done in DA40's and DA42's with glass cockpits. He knows he might need to add on a Degree later if things get too competitive, but he wanted to focus on flying and checking off the ratings, and couldn't be happier with his experience there.
