I know this is an old and pretty useless thread, but I'm just curious where people are getting the 7-8k per year for flu deaths in Canada. Health Canada figures have that around 1500 per year for confirmed flu deaths, and a research paper that estimated total flu mortality using a variety of sources had it at around 3500/year. Are people just using the "influenza and pneumonia" figure? Pneumonia is very quite different and has numerous causes (bacterial, fungal, foreign matter), and is much more common that flu deaths.

Yes, it looks like it is 3500 per year. The higher figure is indeed for pneumonia+influenza.
