Don't buy a lightspeed. Product support is terrible, and you have to pay cross border shipping there and back for any service.

Thanks all very much for the comments and advice. I'm still at the 'drinking from a firehose' stage of flight training, but I will update you on what I get.
UPDATE - I picked up a slightly used AVCOMM AC-900P, still in the box with an extra headband & ear-cushions for $100 CDN off Kijiji. They were still shiny new, and showed very little use. Tried them during a training flight yesterday and they worked well with good isolation for a C150. Got a kneeboard for $10 as well. This will do for starters, I think.
