I think the link to the sub incident was much funnier due to it being a submersible, and that it was related to CEOs/rich people.

It’s in poor taste digits. Common man, people died ffs! If you think either event was funny in the slightest, I’ve no words to describe your callousness regardless of your wicked sense of humour.
I don't think the event was funny. I never claimed it was. That doesn't mean you can't make jokes about it that some people might find funny. Or that there are certain aspects related to the incident that are somewhat funny.

You've never laughed or chuckled at a joke that referenced a dramatic/traumatic event? Ever?
Nope, I can’t say I ever had and I’ve a wicked sense of humour…

Oh well… maybe this thread will go bottoms up? ;)

I appreciate the effort there, but as far as I know, the air would have dissolved into the surrounding water quite quickly at that pressure resulting in more of a fizz than a bang.

As OP, pointing out that many of the posts in this topic include insensitive jokes of the death of 5 people.

viewtopic.php?t=190512

Avcanada mods allow this, and the angry comments in other posts, but delete the topic criticizing Transport Canada for lack of action on repetitive maintenance failures by a regional airline.

A central item of democracy is the ability to openly criticize the government. There’s many topics criticizing the government on covid, or the PM on other policy.

Why illegal on avcanada to criticize TC for not resolving safety concerns that could prevent accidents, while it’s allowed to make fun of 5 people dying in one?

Dude, I, and the other mods, have neither the time, nor the inclination, to trawl through every single post and thread on here to see who's panties are getting twisted on a daily basis. If you're that offended, then use the report button (it's the !) in the top right of every post, and it will flag things for our attention.
I'll personally cop to being inconsistent from day to day about why things do or don't get moderated - I can't/won't speak for the others, however.

AvCanada isn’t democracy or subject to Freedom of Speech. It’s a private, for profit website. If someone anonymously posts something that could be considered libel, AvCanada and its owners could be subject to a defamation lawsuit. The law treats message boards similar to a newspaper and if they “publish” something that could be considered libel they could face civil remedies.

There was a lawyer/law student message board called Lawbuzz.ca that eventually shut down because they were sued.

You’re always welcome to start your own website and post whatever you want…

Defamation applies to people, not to the government or Transport Canada.

Criticism of government’s protected by charter.

Avcanada mods don’t need to restrict criticism of the government or Transport Canada.
There’s many other comments on the site which are worse than criticism of TC.

Defamation does apply to private companies. I’ve bolded and underlined the key sentence. If there’s any allegations of failures or unsafe practices of a company it is indeed prudent for AvCanada mods to remove such posts/topics.

Nonetheless, this is a privately run website. If the owners or mods had a big crush on Omar and only allowed people to say nice things about his sneakers but not anything negative, guess what, that’s totally within their rights. However, I’ve read plenty of criticism of TC on this website.

Very likely, yes. But it wouldn't have popped up in this topic because there would be no link to Westjet management. But rest assured in other topics or other locations people would have joked about it to process the events, and you'd have your chance to be offended or disgusted by it.

Not for a government or Transport Canada, the charter allows for criticism of the government.

As you point out, defamation of person or corporation could happen if a statement is false.

Stating that an airline has a series of mechanical incidents reducing safety for the pilots & passengers is fact & doesn’t qualify as defamation.
It's not a false statement.

If public safety can be improved by the statement, then it’s not defamation.

Stating that an airline has above average mechanical incidents & Transport Canada should be more concerned & enforcing stricter safety measures isn’t defamation.

Criticizing a corporation is allowed & not defamation if safety’s protected or improved.
This is laid out in the code & backed by charter law.

Right. Are you going to pay Avcanada's lawyer costs when the company you're discussing sues?
