Why bother with a Maintenance forum if all you folks do is bicker. Something I've seen in almost every thread here... *sigh*.

Then perhaps you shouldn't post here anymore.

I fly my airplane because I love to fly. I dont get paid for it. Partly because I dont have my CPL yet, and partly because you'll never see me work for an airline for the intention of getting paid. (those guys dont really "fly" anyways)

That should sit well with the scores of Professional Pilots that frequent this site! I think you've crossed the line there. It's bad enough that you have pissed off the Engineers, wait till the Pilots read that!!

We are all entitled to opinions. Or have you forgotten that?

Regardless, I think I'll leave this thread at that. I got some answers to my questions, but it seems unless I slip some of you some 20s for "labour work" I wont get much out of you.

Well I suppose AMEs have to make money somehow eh.

I suggest you add this line to your prices board:

"AME advice: 10 dollars per question or 60 dollars per hour"

rfcPilot. I think the reason AMEs are hesitant about giving advice over the internet is liability. Things could get real nasty if you were to get bad advice or misunderstand advice and end up getting hurt. Not to even mention the pickle Avcanada could be in!
Cheers

PS Actually my prices board reads--
Shop rate--$65.00/hour
If you stand and watch-$70.00/hour
If you insist on helping-$75.00/hour

And I'm also booked solid for the next 4 months.

lol. I figured it would give you someone to kick if something went wrong.

Seriously though, of a few AMEs I've spoken to, they decrease the price if the owner is there. Although the owner is expected to do work, and not just observe. Its easier after all, to remove inspection panels and such.

Mind you said owner is willing to do, and does have *SOME* mechanical knowledge. Then again all pilots should.

Now what would be hilarious, is if rfcPilots AME refused to work on his plane now after all this crap he has posted. If he was my customer, i'd refuse to work on it anymore, not worth the headaches for sure. Another perfect example why there is no money to be made working for small private owners.

If a pilot wants to help give him a ratcheting screwdriver, set it for putting screws IN and tell him to take some panels off. 8) That will keep them busy for hours....."Damn, these is some LONG screws" :D

lol I have just finished reading all these post. It is actually fun to read!!!
All i have to say is anyone can talk on this forum and if i ever owned my own plane i wouldn't rely on ppl here telling me what to do not because I don't think they know what they are doing but simply because what if someone is trying to mess with you and just makes you look stupid...or even cost you a shit load of money..If you want advice on fair play.. Get an AMO you can trust and if you have trust issues then get a second opinion!!

Cheers

I cant believe you guys are still going on this...

For all the AMEs stating you wouldnt maintain my plane.. thats great. A) I dont care, and B) Im interested only in an AME who is interested in aircraft maintenance and owner education. Not an AME that wants money.

To those saying Im an idiot... whos the bigger idiot. The idiot whom first posted or the idiot who answered?

Good on ya for not caving on this one RFC. No matter what anyone says, the rules say you are responsible for maintenance on your aircraft. If an AME gives you inaccurate info, you will ultimately be responsible. Learn the rules, and learn as much as you can about the technical aspects of your aircraft (it ain’t that complicated, the engine was designed in the 40's, and the aircraft was designed in the 60's), and you will be safer, and operate more efficiently.

Obviously if you watch this forum you will see a lot of differing opinions on flying operations and maintenance. It is up to you to separate the wheat from the chaff . You will have to make the right decisions for your aircraft, and in respect of those decisions you may need the advice of an AME. Never, however be so complacent that you accept as absolute truth, anything that an AME (or pilot) tells you, without verifying the information using whatever sources you can count on. Tough call sometimes. However it seems you are well on your way.

hornblower,
Are you just stupid? Have you not read the crap this tool has posted? While I agree with a lot of what you have posted, you are missing the point here. Read the whole post, including the link I provided, and then post again. I'm sure your opinion will change. Or at least I hope you are smart enough to realise why AME's are all pissed at this person.

I heard there's a guy in Sundre who does restorations, recently did something with a Scottish Pioneer, anyone know if he is still in the bus?

Twotter

No.

However I have worked with private owners for a long time, and for the most part they are all somewhat out of their element, and some are downright odd. You expect too much from rfc, he doesn’t know much, but then when he came on asking for some advice he got raked over the coals for not wanting to throw money at his AME. I think a more balanced approach would have been in order. There are too many people on here that offer their point of view without giving a balanced response, then get upset when someone disagrees with them.

Instead of telling him that he must do whatever the AME tells him to do, without question (a bad idea), we should give him the info he needs to make a safe and economical decision, and then leave it up to him. It is his aircraft after all.

I’ve seen a lot of maintenance people offer bad advice, make mistakes, and improperly repair things, we are not perfect, and RFC is probably right to question everything he is told. It is unfortunate that his posts have degenerated into name calling.

A lot of AME’s (probably like yourself), work in the professional world of aviation, and have no experience with operating a GA aircraft. It is a different world in GA, ... different people, different aircraft, different rules.

Hornblower,
I did my stint in GA and am still involved in it to an extent. I've dealt with owners, I've educated them, I will not, however put up with the verbal abuse that has been dished out by this clown.

I hope he finds a shop that will put up with him because I know a lot would just show him the door.

twotter, I wouldnt even walk into your door to begin with if your first concern is money.

An AME's concern should be maintaining the plane (and actually doing a good job of it, ie dont step on the seats or scratch the paint, etc etc etc WHICH I see frequently with a lot of AME/AMO), educating the pilot, and then, talking about a cost.

As for the "harsh words" I think you should remember to note that... between me and you, you started first. Eye for an eye. ;)

You are sure doing a good job of pissing off a lot of people here who could help you but won't because of your attitude.

Yes Hornblower you have some good points. Many posts do spinoff into arrogance and very ignorant replies.

Yes it is obvious RFCpilot has no idea of the aviation business, or business in general. He is absolutely entitled to educate himself but running down a snag sheet on this forum, looking for free advice, is not the way to do it. There are numerous books available at Aviation World to learn from and there are tons of AMO's to go to ask his questions. Perhaps a better approach would be to take his aircraft and the snag sheet from AMO #1 to AMO #2 at a different airfield and get a second opinion. I know it's already been to the AMO TWICE! but perhaps a couple more trips might come his way.

Perhaps RFCpilot's responses do trigger the more seasoned, such as Twotter and others with some not so polite replies, but come on it is understandable. RFCpilot and his posts do stand out.

I believe that fixorfukit answered rfcpilot's questions. His post was the first normal reply to his questions. Right or wrong he was given answers and it was later that others dragged the post into the gutter(?). Just as CID said:

Unfortunately this thread has devolved from a polite post with a simple set of questions to a the classic AvCanada jello-wrestling match.

I am amazed (but not surprised) that all of you have such feelings towards this person. He in turn seems to have developed the same feelings towards some of you.

And even Cat Driver:

I can't believe you guys are even answering this guy....

felt strongly enough to send another reply. Wow.

An apology can't hurt? Can it? The whole point of this site is that it is open to everyone.

Meecka: Is the no way that this person can be prevented from posting in here?

Is it?

Ok. So he pissed you guys off. Wow.

Anyway I enjoyed the post. JHC this was a slow weekend. Can't wait to get back to work.....
