My understanding of Christ's purpose on this earth was to put the Old Testament laws to rest with His "new covenant". So I am constanly amazed at the amount of play that the Old Testament continues to get in the "Christian" community.

The only violence that I can recall Christ perpetrating, WAS ON CHURCH HIERARCHY ITSELF, when He trashed their temple.

Which leads me to believe that Christ Himself would agree with all of you who claim that organized religion is corrupt, violent, the cause of wars.
Except that it was not "religion" per se. which is corrupt... but the power that people have claimed for themselves in the name of religion.

Other than that, His entire message was "Love your neighbour as yourself", and "Turn the other cheek"... pretty non-violent stuff, it seems.

Too bad that those, who claim to follow Him, do not adhere to it.

I've always resented the "turn the other cheek" theory. Strikes me as just another tool for power hungry oppressors. I always question anything in a religion that seems too human (in a negative way) There's just been so many things in the history of religions that have been used by humans in a manner that makes me suspect that they were instituted by humans. Turn the other cheek and go forth and breed like bunnies are good examples of this.

Just my personal opinion, and I use this same criteria for assessing any religion, not just Christianity.

"turn the other cheek" is meant to discourage revenge, and not to discourage justice. We humans have a problem distinguishing the difference.

My point exactly.

Religion, "as practised" in organized form by most (perhaps all) faiths.... IS the the product of humans and their biased interpretations. These organizations have been corrupted accordingly.

This does not mean that the "religious" idea of compassion for your fellow humans is somehow corrupt in itself. Most successful societies were based on "love-for-your-fellow-man" religions, while so-called godless hordes destroyed themselves and faded away.

"I-have-to-destroy-you-because-you-don't-believe-what-I-believe" is not a "religious" conflict. It may be disguised as such, but it is purely a human-societal-cultural one.
