What about a PA-24-180 Comanche?
Not as much juice as its bigger siblings, the 250, 260 and king-shit 400 (but it also doesn't have their fuel consumption), it has 4 seats, moves at a solid clip, and can carry 4 average people if you need it. Also a stable IFR platform if you are looking to build time there too...
Oh, and nothings hotter than retract gear. Well, except maybe a symmetrical wing....

When I looked around to do the same thing, the best plane I came up with was a PA28-180. Paid about half the price as I would have for a 172 with the same amount of time on it. Has a higher payload than the PA28-140's that I looked at, will easily carry 3 people and bags. Easy and fun to fly and doesn't guzzle the fuel. Decent insurance rates as well.
Highly recommend this plane...gets there faster than a 172, but still slow enough to build some decent time on...
