Re: Air Canada/Jazz Missed Approach in Kelowna
The only thing more stupid than this thread is the clowns at Global Vancouver that thought this so-called "story" was worthy of airing at all. Worse still, it was the first item at 1800 last night. Among the gems in the story: ancient archival footage of Jazz BAe 146, and a Google Earth animation of an RJ at YLW which may have been impressive to some folks, but not to the viewer that sees them approaching runway 33!
So, if the REAL reason for the g/a was a truck on the runway, why no second approach to landing? I'll tell you media morons why - the crew would have likely been test pilots with a CRFI of .23! As for the folks being upset, the flight was almost two hours late. I will assume that they were affected by the sh tshow in central Canada that day, and were held in YVR for connections from AC, as this was the last flight into YLW that night. If I were in the back of a plane at 0400 body-clock time after a stressful day of delayed travel I would be upset too if I couldn't get to destination. But I would be alive and well. I'll get there tomorrow.
Were these folks in any danger? Hell no! I also know that my ACJazz peers, and those at any carrier of repute, whatever tail colour, would never push the limits in such a scenario. Save the test flying to Bombardier.
As a sidenote, if nothing else the lesson to me is to be careful what you tell the pax on the p/a. I am also futher skeptical about the media, but that 's been covered on this forum before.

Re: Air Canada/Jazz Missed Approach in Kelowna
I saw this on the news the other day. It was presented as a near repeat of the 737 crashing in Cranbrook when they tried to avoid a vehicle on the runway. The passenger told the media that the pilot stated they had to go around because of snow removal equipment on the runway. I think it was probably a misunderstood cabin anouncement. The pilot probably said something about having to go around because the snow removal hadn't cleared the runway (of ice).
I still can't believe that the media ran with some moron who had sat in the back of the plane on that leg quite often and knew that something was out of the ordinary despite JAZZ, NC, TC etc all saying that there was no vehicle on the runway after having reviewed the tapes.

We have no effective screening methods to make sure pilots are sane.

This is the fekin problem with the news media these days! Anything to do with anything is a fekin huge deal. Cathay comes in YVR with no flaps and the douche bag on the news is suddenly an aviation expert saying this and that! That retard on the Jazz flight the other night should jump off a bridge. What a muppet! I hope his buddies just take the piss out of him for going on national TV and freaking out like little red riding hood seeing a wolf. Bitches

Can't Jazz or NC sue the media for such a misinformed report? I don't know what it'd fall under but isn't AvCan getting threatened all the time when someone reports something bad about their company based on speculation on a public forum? How many passengers are going to think twice about flying into Kelowna this holiday now? Can they really just go running their mouth with no consequence?

Re: Air Canada/Jazz Missed Approach in Kelowna
If anyone knows the names of the passengers, PM me.
I have family who sometimes fly with Jazz.
Thanks, BL

I kinda floated a bit on my landing the other day. We had about 10,000 feet of runway, so it wasn't too much of a big deal. I was just wondering if anyone heard about it.

Re: Air Canada/Jazz Missed Approach in Kelowna
This has to be the worst last few days in aviation, ever.
And now this.
Terrible.
Not only was your landing on every major news-network but they also had amateur cell phone footage from every angle.
Its #1 on Break and Liveleak. Your real name was posted everywhere too and probably now on every employers blacklist.
So lets hope you don't lose your job, but I'm sure there will be an extensive debriefing.
I don't really know what I can say that would be much help.
If you are used to smaller, maybe a little large runway illusion...
A little float could also mean too much speed. Keep the PNF calling out that Vref.
Just remember a good approach sets you up for a good landing too.
Thats a top-tip.

Re: Air Canada/Jazz Missed Approach in Kelowna
1) That Jazz flight was late / unscheduled / a "charter"
2) The tower at Kelowna closes at 2230 local time (per CFS).
3) The Runway maintenance types routinely NOTAM the runway closed at 0500 local and begin snow removal at THAT time.
4) That passenger on the news is a giant Tool. There's always one when the media want to 'sex up' an aviation story.

Re: Air Canada/Jazz Missed Approach in Kelowna
I flew on an airplane once...I guess I know just about everything there is to know about flying...how fast? I don't know, goodness only knows how many kilometers per hour the plane was going.

Apparently, all the 4 engines of the twin were on fire
