Seen it...............done it......... never to return to Contracting again...it is a dead-end way of life. Took me a bit of time to figure it out....the only way to go is............. Overseas Contracting ...then and only then are you are in a league of high rollers.......it sure bring back harsh memories...$35.00 per hour...........when you start pulling in $500.00 per day...that is contracting...nobody here talks per hour shit..........its per month....when you start talking dollars by the month...then you have arrived...anything less is just chicken little....................

I would have to agree that contracting overseas puts more in the pocketbook

Look at Flight international, there is a listing of contract agencies there.

I contracted at Altenrhein in Staad and there were quite a few contractors there, a lot of tin bashers. Switzerland can be expensive but if you live moderatly and get a Swiss bank acct it will pay off.

500.00 a day is not as bad as 35.00 hr, I charge 45.00 hr for the first 8 hrs, 60.00 hr after that, and do not have to go oversea's or the NWT, do it all right here in alberta, you do get the odd guy that will b**ch and complain but if you say you will not work for less there are people and company's that will pay. I might not get alot of work but when I do I get paid what I am worth.

I agree with $35/hr and how some companies are cheap here. I just got back from a direct contract up in YZF, and I tried to bash out a longer term contract, (6 months). They cheaped out, I would ended up getting paid less per hour after my extra costs (Insurance and WCB), then when I was a full time employee at Air Canada, after the concessions. CAS pays me more then they were willing, and I was told they were desperate for an Avionics guy. I think overseas is the way to go. Ummm, any leads for an Avionics guy who also has an EU passport??

If you wanna go overseas thats the best site to go on. It gives you all the names you need to know. Parc, CBS Butler, ect... If you register your CV click yes on the "are you allowed to work in the EU" question because as far as I can tell we can.

There's either an abundance of openings(shot in the dark - Dash-8??), in Iqaluit, or nobody is interested in going up there.
I've talked to better part of a dozen people, in the last month, who have been contacted.

Yes, I have been there, once.

I have been contracting for close to 4 years...started out at $37/hr plus $. Now it is down to 35 and 50. :x
Anyways I have been with CAS and worked with a few of you here. I also do independent work when not with them, making more $$. Cas always pay on time and being with them as long as I have I know what they will try and they know not to try it with me anymore 8) . They don't F around anymore cause I always get requestd by the customer to come back.
All I can say is that being a contractor all you have going for you is your reputation...if you F up the word gets out there pretty quick. You have to work hard keep out of the company politics and full time employee griping.

WHAT I can tell you is....don't work for ICL!! They will EFF you around and pay you when they want! even though they have so called pay periods!!

cheers

I've been working with CAS since April, and I must say they always pay me on time, and correctly. They tried to F... me around too, until they realized I could get my own contracts if need be. Also the customer always request me back. Even to the point of asking me back as a mechanic, (I'm Avionics). Anyway, I'm back up at the end of November on another tour to YZF.

I've stuck my name in tonnes of overseas agencies and no bites yet. I'll go anywhere as long as it isn't Iraq or the like. I value my life somewhat. Is it me, or are some of these companies a little slow to respond. The only one that I have actually had communication with is Parc. I even put one in where they wanted a Canadian Avionics licensed and endorsed on A320s with min 5 years experience. Never heard back. Tsk.

One of the reasons I went into contracting was to see some different places, so far Yellowknife is it. Mmmm, and winter is here. I want somewhere warm, maybe Aruba or Bora Bora. I might even take a bit of pay cut for that. :-)

So which is the better contracting company to work for?

$35 an hour for YZF is not much $50 an hour would sound more like it.

Good luck trying to get $50/hr!

IMOP the contracting firms are getting greedy! A few years ago the money was better but now there are more contractors out there so there is more guys to choose from so they low ball you!

Going independent is the way to go if you can get in the door with a good company. I make over $10,000 a month in contracting...if I work 6 days a week 12/hrs a day. That is the way I work! I often work 7 days a week.

When I go on a contract I go to work...not to party, hense the reason I always get called back! If you don't show up for work or show up stinking of booze and are of no use then that gets around and you are fawked!

Oh yeah, just have to be willing to travel a bit. If you have a high BS tolerance you can make a lot of money, without getting your ass shot off, maybe just chilled though.

Does any of the contractors out there have your own business, and you employ yourself through your business, or do you just contract and pay your taxes at the end of the year? Just wondering which is the better way to go, if there is one.

I incorporated myself, it gives you a certain amount of protection liability wise if you mess up. Ask your accountant about that or soul proprieter ship. See what works for you.

Just wondering if connies are actually signing the maintenance releases or just doing the actual work? Do these companies give you ACA as they would a permie?
Also, who is responsible for re-current training?

Well I think it depends about the ACA, I have mine back, but overseas I don't have it. I'm heading down south so we'll see. Recurrent training now thats a good question?

Im like bombfixer, I have an incorporated company for the liability protection and as well as some tax benefits. Im kind of an exception to the rule as I have been working at my current location alot longer than I initially thought I would be as a contractor. Im hoping it is because I bring a wide variety of experience with me and am quite flexible when need be. I hold full ACA, covered under workmans comp, and get recurrent training just like any other person currently working there. Our QA guy at least once a month has an in house recurrency training worksheet that all employed are to complete. It has been pretty good training as it forces you to go online and search thru CARs, thumb through the company MPM/MCM, or sometimes its just a short story (human factors related)and a questionaire at the end.

Wow, you guys get $10,000/month. I'm still pretty new at this, only 7 months, worked for CAS and one independant contract. Got burnt on the indie contract, live a little, learn a lot. International is the way to go, I think, and being a dual citizen, but I don't have that blasted B2 ticket. Could have gotten it while I was still in the UK, but being a young hothead at the time......

I put tonnes of requests out for Europe but no bites. Tried all the places mentioned here before, but can't seem to get a nibble. 16 years of experience, ahh well. Any advice for going Independant? Like I said, got burnt once. I do own my own company, GST # and all, though not incorporated, yet.
