If all the DHC-6 operators operated in the same way, everyone would be flying legally, safely and making more money.

So what is wrong with that? Why sell the airplane short just because "its always been done that way?"

If it is really critical for the maximum efficiency of the aircraft to load it in the way you've been doing it, why didn't DeHavilland, Bombardier and now Viking, include provisions for this in the type design for the airplane. I'm guessing the manufacturer would want the liability/responsibility - but why not ask them?

Anyway, thanks for listening, and carry on....

Firstly, not all operators are going to do it....at least not with SMS in place to allow self surveillance.

And quite frankly what pisses me off about this sort of thing is the lack of common sense. I know what the regs say. When you're moving 3 beakers to some camp on Ellef Rignes Island and have to tell them that you have to do it in 2 trips because "thats what the rules say, despite the stupidity of it". They don't have the money for 2 trips. And for those who will say "well if they dont have the money then they dont fly", STUFF IT. There is common sense here. And if I had alot of cargo stuffed in the old girl with 2 peeps in the back and I HAD TO GET TO THEM for some reason, I could. It might take me a minute or two but I could always communicate with them if I HAD TO.

Sorry, lack of common sense just makes my blood boil.

Cheers,

ETTW

I don't think the issue is quite the same for the Caravans and DHC-3 single Otters, because these two aircraft don't have four exits in the cabin.

No but when loading a Caravan on floats the cockpit doors are almost always blocked off from the rest of the cabin either by luggage and the cargo bulkheads. Sometimes (albeit not very often and only when the custumers are extremely bulky with their gear) the air stair doors on the right side of the cabin get blocked ... i realize this is not so much the case with the otter now that i think of it.

I dont have any real expierience with the -6 and did not realize there were 4 actual exits in the cabin. In fact the only one i have ever even been in was an old -100 series. And that was quite a while back.

I ask these questions just to learn a bit more I hope they are not too naive ... I just didnt know so i asked.

You start with a bag full of luck and an empty bag of experience. The trick is to fill the bag of experience before you empty the bag of luck.

Doesnt the bulkhead have to come out of the Caravan on floats?

Nope - Not that i am aware of. At least none of the ones i have seen have had to remove it.

It"s not what the law say but what is being enforced...

Solve your problem there, operate a single turbo-Otter
with a Garrett and high gross(9000#)...beat the early Twotters hands down
and no arguments from the suits! Lovely WITHOUT the elephant legs...
