why are we obsessed with guns?
they're just convenient and small. I would have no problem with a plastic garbage can full of hunting knives, machetes, etc at every bording gate, and every pax picked up whatever he wanted, and dropped off when he deplaned.

Quarterstaffs, morningstars and battle-axes sound neat at first, but they might be difficult to stow under the seat or in the overhead baggage compartment.

Now you're just being silly. Though last time I flew on WestJet there was an old guy who was pretty handy with three feet of steel he called a cane, so its not like you can't get on an airplane armed if you want to be.

Mmmph, mmph, mmph!! Ow, my tongue!!

Seriously... I feel very sorry that you live in a world that frightens you so much. Most people I know, can and do defend themselves every day. With intellect and good choices... failing that, with their hands. Weapons, guns in particular are the domain of the frightened and the cowards of the world. Yeah, they are tools for hunting and going to war... but they are not required for everyday life in the city.

I'm going to go on enjoying my life, secure in the knowledge that I will live to die of old age.
