Thanks for that Bede.
I've been checking the news all day and the only update I found was that there was fog in the vicinity of Smithers. Hopes and prayers.

Also for those that are wondering, when I flew around that area 5-6 years ago, Smithers area was really bad for radar coverage.

Thank goodness there were no passengers, but my heart and prayers go to the family and the two gentlemen.

I agree until otherwise stated they could be hanging out on a green pad of grass somewhere!

LETS HOPE!

I'm here in CYXS on standby to go out and look for them (I'm with CASARA). As crews from areas along the actual flightpath get burned out we'll come in, likely tomorrow or Sunday. Just know that everything is being done to find them. I hope they're found before I have to go out there!

Good luck guys, my thoughts are with you and with your families

Search area

Post by PC12's are better »

Does anyone know why the search area is so large, , 4-6000' Comox terminal could have them on radar till at least Knight / Bute inlet? I understand that there is a lot of area to cover from that point on but it at least gives a good idea on where they don't need to look.

I have not heard anything from the news re radar coverage, does anyone know if the ATC tapes are released to Victoria Rescue Coordination Center?

it's my understanding that those tapes are not allowed to be used for search and rescue. it's deemed a liability in the eyes of NAVCANADA. can anyone shed any light on this information?

I don't know whether they are still considered a liability, but, Radar tapes have been used for SAR as recently as this year. So I would fully expect that in this case Victoria RCC would have access to any images they had this time.

Not true. In a life or death situation, RCC or TSB may ask for them. How helpful they are is another question. Wheather the aircraft was IFR or VFR determines how much info can be useful. And of course, if said aircraft was in radar coverage.

Teacher,

Is there an article out yet, where was it found, what happened? How can the industry, with all our regulations and technology, still be losing such valuable assets?

Deepest regards
